Oh yes, lick granuloma......how well do I know you...

At best we manage it, and at least keep her from getting to the veins. Seriously.

I use Vetericyn when I am in wrapping stage. I find that heavier cotton sport socks work best, she'll rip off a kid sock in seconds. I use leg wraps from Neo Paws when she is out in public.....she also has a boot as she did have a toe sore.

I have an entire box of tape, gauze, disinfectants, antiseptics, creams, steroids.

When I am home a lot, I can get some healing going on, but as soon as I have to go out to work, cone or no cone, everythings a shredded mess when I return. And then we start again.

And Swilly eats those no-lick strips like they are beef jerky. I have a bunch. If they work for you, I'll mail them to you gratis.

Best of luck with this. It did turn up as genetic in the study, and I saw visible evidence with Priscilla's relatives.

I have tea tree oil in my box also.

The book said not to spray on the wound, but you can dilute it to a 10% solution for use as an antiseptic.

We couldn't be in the same room with her..lol.

So how is that going with Simon, Meadowcat?

I saw you mention it in another thread and figured this thread would be a good place to update with the newest addition to my arsenal.

I had tried duct tape on top of her sock and bandages when I went out, but you would be surprised how many billions of pieces of duct tape you have to pick out of the carpet.

I got disgusted the other day and grabbed the packing tape, not the brown one, but the clear tape that is horribly sticky and impossible to tear.

It was a little noisy, she looked a little po'd but lo and behold, when I got home, all was intact!

Of course, it doesn't allow air in for healing, so it wouldn't be something to leave on for a long time.

Everything is worth a try. I have a pretty big box. :) Oh, dog first aid box, I mean.

Pretty much anything anti-lick hasn't worked on this girl. She has the hereditary disposition, the stressful history, and now, the singularity of that paw to deal with.

It is far worse when I have to go out, so I am glad not to have to do that as much now, or I work around it with my husband's schedule.

I will try the pokey holes MC, thanks for the idea.

It is actually quite small right now but whenever we get there, it seems to go south...

It is annoying, I have to nudge her at night often to stop it.

There is a reason for licking, and every dog is different.

Sometimes it is as simple as your dog being bored.

So, you have a bloodhound. I assume you do a lot of scent work with her? (See what I mean?)

The lick strips are useless imo. I keep trying to give them away....hint, hint..

Whilst I couldn't test it out due to Zil's liver....I strongly suspect that an anti-anxiety/ocd type drug like clombicalm or diazepam/alprazolam families of drugs might show great promise....although my main reservation would be their effects on liver/kidneys etc and that they don't bring on a bigger problem like organ damage. I'd be really interested to hear if anyone has had success with pharmacutical psychoactives.

Chlomipramine for a year or more, she is now off and exactly the same. No effect.

Yup, this is a whole other nightmare.

MC, pop me a PM with your email and I will send you the PDF files that were sent to me by Tufts when Priscilla was in the OCD study.

They talk about Memantine and since I am going to the vet today, I am going to run this by him and see what he thinks.

Do I need to worry about wrapping vet wrap too tightly? I mean, I know you have to be careful with ears, but I think it's okay to wrap a bit more firmly on the legs, right? I obviously need it to be tight enough to keep his socks on.
Yes, you need to worry.

Swilly has a fluidy, fatty, lumpiness on her ankle. I was trying not to tape tightly, but even so, the vet told me today whenever you wrap without encompassing the foot, you compromise the circulation.

Of course, I've been wrapping her wrist for almost two years now.

I had a bandage on her leg under the ankle brace and it was taped at the top with packing tape.

At the vet's took the tape and brace off - no bandage. That tongue had gone up and under the brace. NOM.

The vet said he knew of one dog that stopped because of chiropractic treatment, but that it would only work if a pinched nerve was causing it. On the other hand, she could probably use an adjustment, so I'm going to check it out.

Chlomipramine, same thing I think.

I've had her on Nature's Variety (26% one of the lowest I've found so far) for six months now, and nope, no change.

I do try to keep it covered at all times. She only has the one front leg though - I am with her almost all the time and she seems to just forget about it for the most part. I do catch her licking the sock, or she'll sneak off and rip it open sometimes. Especially if I get lazy and don't change the bandage.

She has never gone to a back leg, but she did lick her flank a lot for a while. I think that was before amputation.

I almost hate to tempt fate by saying this......., but it's looking pretty good right now. Sock with the ankle brace over top. Not even a bandaid. :woohoo:

She licked right to the veins when she was defeating my bandaging more often.

Dog Boots, Dog Shoes, Dog Jackets, Dog Sweaters - Neo-Paws

They are called leg wraps. You can probably say hi from me LOL.....I order a couple every month or so, after she has shredded them.......She wears a L+.
She's a big girl so that would probably be the size you would be looking at as well.

Made of black Neoprene rubber with reflective straps, they are ideal to use on animals suffering from arthritis and inflamed joints. They can also be used to protect wounds and/or bandaging. For agility dogs, the wraps protect their legs when hitting against hard obstacles. Leg Wraps are priced and bought individually. Black only. Sizes: XXS - XXL
I have to try and shoot a paw pic tonight.
