My Dog Mouths Himself

1466 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  GingerGunlock
Hi guys,

Does anybody have any idea why my dog occasionally mouths himself in an aggressive looking manner? It's not licking, biting or scratching, it's mouthing.

Thanks.

where is your boy doing this?

i know of dogs who will basically chew their own whole foot in their mouths when they have an itch/pain/or allergy flare....
Is he flank-sucking?
It's not flank-sucking or chewing, just mouthing. Think the way a dog would mouth your arm, but in an aggressive manner.

He only ever does this whilst we're inside relaxing.
to which part of his body?

it could be pain, allergies, or who knows what, i'd get it checked out if you 're concerned.

Is he looking at you while doing it? If so he could just be bored and is trying to get you to play with him. Considering he is a puppy...

This is similar to what he does - Nico biting himself daft dog.mov - YouTube

I'm not concerned, just curious.

On occasion he has looked at me whilst doing it, then barked at me immediately after. This would explain the playing suggestion. Other times, he's on his bed just about to relax.
ahh that's pretty normal for a pup, i always attribute it to a sort of, restless tired attitude if it's at a nap time otherwise a bored puppy, like a small child fiddling with his hair or blankets when he lays down for a nap or has nothing to do.

That explains it. Thank you.
Elka does something similar to that every once in awhile, and has since she was a puppy. (anthropomorphism alert!) When she does it, she seems to be pretending her paw is a monster.

That's exactly what it looks like. Almost like he's pissed at his own paw.

my red girl has done this before, I actually did get pics of her doing it, just have not uploaded them yet, she attacks her front paw as if its a toy, she picks it up, tosses it around and chews on it, yes, she's a very strange redhead.

How very unusual.

Bruce attacks his bed in a similar manner right before he falls asleep. I have always contributed it to him just being over tired, and like a grumpy kid. On occasion his feet have been the subject of his "I'm so tired I'm cranky" attitude.

Well, in Elka's case, to me it's obvious that she's playing. She'll also mouth in a similar manner a toy that she's covered with a blanket.
