the subject on the thread makes me curious of the story:) We tried the bark collar that shoots the lemon smell or whatever when they bark on coco...he likes to bark at the people going down the sidewalk through the fence...he tries to look furoscious(sp) he seemed to be to caught up in wanting to bark to care about the spray...Now we just lined the fence with black landscape fencing so he cant see the people through the fence...so now he does this little bark bark HOP HOP to try to see what he is barking at lol

Back story....<takes deep breath>....Ok we have lived here for a little over two years. When searching for a new home we took many many things in to consideration ie:how far apart we were from neighbors, acreage etc. We have a little less than 3 acres, a little more than half fenced in (due the steep hill a ways behind us, or it all would be) So when we put a contract on it we were told the lot next door (3 acres) was a "un-build-able" lot, could not be sold. GREAT we thought awesome buffer, dogs could bark at what ever it is they tend to bark at and bother no one. Two weeks later ground is being broke for the new house ON the "UN-BUILD-ABLE" arrrrrhhhhh Ok no big deal right? Wrong.... I meet the owner to be who informs me right off the bat that the reason she moved here (our small town) was to get away from barking dogs < I cringe as my guys are out back doing the zooomies as one barks as he goes by> OK no problem we modify our current board fence, we board up the other side so the can't see anyone. Well the bad thing is they can still hear everyone. And like CoCo they now bunny hop down the fence to "see". I happen to find it hilarious...but I guess they do not. They suggested to me I get them shock collars, I bit my tongue and said I might ponder it...NOT. Well as time went on she would call and let me know that the dogs were ruining her lunch with her Mother. I was a wreck...

1.they're Dobes...bad mark there
2.they bark to let me know whats going on.....bad mark there

So tonight PeeWee was outside and to be honest with you I don't pay attention to most of her barks, it depends on what type it is. And she wasn't doing her serious barking like when she finds a snake or the like. They are not obnoxious, they to me are mouthy. They "talk" to me in the house all the time
Plus I grew up in a kennel, you got worried when they weren't making noise LOL.
So she called me up tonight and said "I'm sorry we seem to be disturbing your dogs tonight, it's our anniversary and we decided to eat our dinner on the deck. No problem I brought them in.
I find in my searching the UltraSonic bark control to be a humane way, so I was wondering if anyone else had, has currently using this or something like it?

I don't know who is or isn't being accomodating. How much time do the dogs spend out in the yard? Are they there when you aren't home? If you are home, are you out in the yard with the dogs?

Given how people are these days I don't want fights with the neighbors over barking dogs. My dogs don't spend much time in the yard. The Doberman is 10 months old and if he starts barking out there and doesn't stop after a couple of barks I bring him in.

Micdobe, I never leave them outside unattended. Weather permitting I will leave the back door open and they come in and out, but that is if I am downstairs. If I need to be upstairs for any length of time I shut the door (with them in LOL). When I am outside with them I discourage barking as well as when I am in the house I will bring them in, I honestly didn't feel the barking last night was incessant.

I don't think you should get any barking device for your dogs. If you aren't comfortable with them. It just sounds to me your neighbour's are assholes (pardon my language). Because they call over and over again. I mean, disrupting her lunch with her Mother? I'd be very irrate. Maybe it's hte type of person I am. But I'd continue on with what I was doing. UNLESS my dogs were barking at the ppl and wanting to get over the fence. Other wise I see no propblem with it. IMO Dogs bark, it's life. Dogs bark when they want something, they bark when they're playing. It would be a wonderful thing if htey could talk to us and let us know what's going on. But unfortunatly, they Bark! :)

Good luck with that. We move in July. I really hope we have great neighbours lol. Bruno isn't a barker, so I'm not worried about that. But I am worried about their attitude towards us having a Dobe.

im sorry but i will have to disagree - i find it rude and annying when my neighbors dogs bark nonstop - even if they are out with them.

there is no reason for my dogs to be barking outside incessantly - if they do, i correct them and stop them, or bring them inside. i dont allow nonstop barking in the house, i dont allow it anywhere. its rude and disruptive.

my neighbors have dogs that bark nonstop - and its annoying and i cannot WAIT to move - beacuse im tired of being on the phone and having them bark. im tired of being out on my deck and having them bark at me. im tired of watching a movie and having a barking dog be the background. i cannot spend any time outside of my house without having one of them bark, and their nonstop barking makes it hard for MY dogs to be outside and quiet - so i eventually have to take them inside.
`

they dont need an electronic collar - they need training, pure and simple. barking inappropriately means the fun ends and game over. you can bark a warning, you can bark when appropriate, but you dont get to bark nonstop and you dont get to bark to hear your own "voice".

every weekend morning at 6 am, two of my neighbors tie their dogs up outside and they commence barking something that goes on intermittently for hours on end. when saturday is your only day to sleep "in", it's pretty frustrating to have to wake up because all you can hear is the local golden and shiba inu barking at each other.

i think your neighbor is being pretty polite about it - even though you may not hear it because you grew up in a kennel, that doesnt change the fact that your dogs are barking a ton and disrupting your neighbors life.

If dogs see something it is natural for them to bark but if they go on and on then they need to be taken inside or better yet trained not to do so, yes dogs bark but the burden of training them is on us.

I can speak from both ends because Da'Kari barks when outside so I too have to bring her in if it gets out of hand. If something alerts her and she barks that is fine but not going on and on. She doesn't do it all the time, there are times when she will play for hours without a peep but if there is a lot going on outside the fence then she starts.

OTOH right across the street there are four shih tzu's that are let out all at once first thing bright and early for potty and wake me up every morning barking sharp little barks.

I think people always need to be considerate of other people at our best ablilty. This lady does deserve to be able to sit outside in her backyard without disruption with her mother, with her husband or just alone. Our homes are our sanctuary where we can relax. We choose to have dogs but they didn't have a choice :)

I know this is on the not so popular opinion side but I see it from both sides, the side of having a barking dog and one of having been and continuously being disturbed by outside barking, I can't in good conscience allow mine to disrupt other peoples peace and quiet.

I know I don't post very often but was just curious, how long have you had the new neighbors? When I had my adult Dobe she would bark at the new neighbors till she was used to them, she even got to the point where she recognized his family members and didn't bark at them, but strangers she would. Dobes tend to protect what they see, is there a chance maybe your neighbor would come to the fence and meet the dogs, maybe even give them a cookie if they sit so they will know she belongs there, or is she not really the kind of person you can work with? Love the pic, behind the fence LOL!

I think that's a good idea. :)

What I meant by the dogs being allowed to bark. Is if they were just playing doing whatever. I don't believe it has mentioned if the dogs bark all day for no reason. Or if they are barking at the neighbour, or what they are barking at. So I think with what is given, I would be angry that the neighbour keeps nagging. If the dogs are being tied out in the early morning and left there. Then of course I'd be livid with that. But if they're out in the middle of the afternoon and not doing the non stop bark, but just playing around bark. Then I see no problem with it.

Bruno will only bark if he's unfamiliar with something. Once he gets use to it being there, or say the neighbour's being there. He's fine. He's really not a barker. Or rather a barker for no apparent reason.

I have to go along with the people who think training is in order. Unfortunatly this would have been a lot easier if it had never became an acceptable habit but it can still be done.

My pet peeve is just what you are describing, a dog that barks at neighbors. People have a right to be in their own yards without having to listen to someone else's dog. I would at the very least try to introduce the dogs to the neighbors over the fence and outside the fence so that the dog knows there is no threat. If it is just boredom that is causing this then it would be time for lots of exercise and training classes.

Mine don't bark unless there is reason, the problem with them is that once they start it is a little hard to get them to stop, for instance if there are dogs loose in the neighborhood (against leash law but it is fact *sigh*) they will bark until the dogs go away so I end up having to bring mine in. I go out on the back patio and read or take laptop (wireless internet) or do yard work and they will play for hours and not bark, they do of course do the little growly and bark at each other but it is not the "loud something is amiss bark". That I don't mind because they are playing and I don't think the neighbors pay it any mind. It is incessant barking that gets irritating. That I won't allow my dogs to do. If my neighbors were to complain to me then I would do all that I could to insure that they would not disturb anyone. That is my place to do so. I don't think someone is being rude by asking or hinting that we keep our dogs quiet. There is no law here that we must but I want to do it out of respect. The same as I wish others would respect us by keeping their dogs on leash but they don't LOL. I try to follow the city ordinanes but yet I deal with dogs in our garbage on pick up day, many times we have been up at the crack of dawn picking up garbage, talked to the owners and they get arrogant, it's not fair to us, but finally I got pictures :) and the owner was still arrogant, wanted to know "IF WE" put the lids on tight ROFL, it wouldn't matter if I laid it all out on the streets in bags his dog shouldn't bother my garbage and wouldn't if they follow the rules.

LOL OK, I will get off my soap box, hehe.

Well in thinking on this all night and today I am sure I made the problem worse by boarding up the fence so they couldn't see. I have been up since 6am they have had access outside all morning and not a peep, they bark more when the neighborhood dogs and cats come around to, and I do bring them in. Well it's time to invest in some training!! Thank you for all the input!

Dakari, see. NOw that would piss me off too lol. Dogs loose! I use to hate that when I lived at home with my parents. Always a stray dog running around and coming into our yard bugging our dogs. That I'd have to try to put an end too. Also more so because you are left picking up garbage when you shouldn't HAVE too. Geesh. And I had to laugh when you said you even took pictures HA HA ;)

LOL I did, and the very two dogs that are allowed to run loose are in mine and the neighors garbage in those pics and I have them on my computer for safe storage but it doesn't matter because get this, the owner of one of the dogs, the arrogant one is the cousin or nephew of our JUDGE in town. *sigh* so you know what that means. We have called animal control, I have talked to just about everyone I know to call, it does NO good because of who he is. Other than that it is a great place.

My husband goes to work at 4:30 a.m. so one morning he was leaving and there was garbage all over the street from this owners previous dog and Mark went over at 4:30 a.m. and pretty as you please banged on the dog, ohhh he was hot and the sleepy wife came to the door and Mark let them know that there was garbage all over and it was Ace that did it, we knew because she was the only dog running at that time. She has since died and then they got this other pup. Not one time was our garbage gotten into after she died until this new one and she is doing it with her bestest neighbor doggie friend, a little JRT who came after Ace died also.

I know from both sides and feel that dogs should not be let to bark. Unfortunately some people do take things to an extreme I have learned. I do not allow my dogs more than a few times. We do not have a barking ordinance where I currently live, and you can tell. I feel it is rude, but most of the time, it is pretty quiet. OTOH, where I lived before, there was a barking ordinance. The neighbor did not like my dogs because of their breed. She would call the animal control daily and make false complaints of excessive barking. When they would drive by, they would be on the back porch resting or under the tree. I feel it is rude. She never once came to me with a complaint and I finally went to her. Feel lucky that your neighbor is coming to you with the complaint. She ended up being warned by animal control to stop making false calls. :) They loved my dogs. I was more than happy when I moved.

I agree with Kim

incessant barking is annoying. I don't like my dogs doing it and I don't allow it.

I allowed Dunc a few barks when he was outside but then that's enough. He was great all I had to do was knock on the window and he'd trot back in the house immediately.

The puppy I was looking after was very vocal and loved her voice so it was challenging training her.

I agree as well, I don't feel they are incessant barkers. But they do bark at cats, dogs etc.and I guess to the neighbor any barking they do is incessant. Yes RedGirl I do think she will work with me, I will start taking them over and vise versa have them come over as well.
