More ear problems!! :(

1293 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  MichelleAyrheart
So my girl is 4 months now, and ive been having nothing but problems with her ears...they have never been infected, just red and raw inside from time to time....my question is could that be the tape i was using...i was using a paper tape to wrap the posts because thats what the vet told me to use...although i noticed it wasnt very sticky and was bugging her ears so i ordered zonas tape off the internet....her ears have been down for a day now and the one is floppy, the one is up most of the time....should i still post if they are irritated, or should i wait another day or two and let them heal up and try again with the zonas tape...im all worried now about her ears not standing because she is 4 months old now...i keep having setback after setback with her ears...any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!!

can you post a picture of her ears untaped so we can see how irritated they are?

is your pups breeder able to help you?
I wouldnt worry about them not standing at 4 months, I had to post Bellas ear until she was 7 months due to an infection and having to leave it unposted for a week at 5 months. It might just take a little more time once the irritation clears up but dont give up on it.

My puppy is 5 months old and his ears aren't even close to standing and I'm not at all concerned. Just keep posting. It's a judgement call on if the ears are irritated enough to warrant leaving down for a bit. Just depends on how bad it is and how you post.

I feel lucky mine is 3 months and had two tapings and her only need one maybe two more they are up all the time just not quite so straight . But I would leave them down for a few days until they clear up you shouldn't wrap up with any moisture in there.
I would most defantly leave them untaped until the redness/bumps, etc goes away. My Arya had some red bumps, I'm thinking it was from the heat. So I left them untaped for a few days, it cleared up and I retaped her. She will be 4 months on the 22nd and we are standing great, but I'm keeping her taped because one ear has a slight limp, but could be from teething. I also use johnson's zonas tape on the inside of her ear and outside. It's worked wonderfully. You do need to remove the sticky in the ears that builds up. Good Luck :)
Sounds like rubbing irritation. Many on here will religiously recommend tapes that aren't very sticky. Not that that is a bad thing, but if the posting isn't done in a secure enough fashion, they will rub against the ears, and that friction is what will cause the irritation.

To me, using the terms red and raw is from rubbing irritation. Gotta make sure the posts are secure to the ear.

Take the sticky side of your zonas tape and rub it on your arm for a bit, you'll see the irritation. :)

You can either help protect the ears before posting, maybe some cornstarch powder or some type of zinc oxide, or you can try gluing. With the skin glue there is no rubbing. Only real downfall is it is a bit messier to do and takes longer to clean the ears once changing posts. Slight upside is the glue buys you a few more days for posting.

My pup was on a 10 day rotation, sometimes a day or two less because he plays so hard with the other dogs. My pup is also right around 4.5 months old and his ears are done. I think I posted him maybe 4 times the entire time, from the very 1st on 8-10-11 til now. Once the glue on the tape became worn out and the posts started popping out of his ears, I removed the posts, cleaned the ears and left them unposted for a day or two, then reposted.

A lot of people will freak out and say the ears must not be left unposted for more than 20-30 minutes or whatever the norm around here is, but the vet who did my boys crop (medium) told me to do it that way. I followed the vets instructions and not even 1.5 months later I am done with the main posting.

Her ears werent real badly irritated, just a few spots and i noticed when i changed her posts before there was lots of sticky goop on her ears, i ended up posting her ears today with the zonas tape to see if that made a difference, she is shaking her head still a bit every once and a while, i know i didnt tape too tight im so nervous about that so its probably too loose half the time. Her ears didnt look really raw or irritated today when i looked thats why i decided to post them back up, one ear stands pretty good and the other was flopped over, i just dont know what to do anymore, i dont want her to keep shaking her head, i feel bad for her...i guess well see how she does, if she keeps shaking by tomorrow i guess ill take the posts out to see whats wrong, thanks everyone for all your replies, im totally alone on this i didnt find this site until after i already bought my girl....needless to say her breeder was deffinatley a byb :( i wish i knew then what i do now, but a little too late, only thing i can do is move on and know in the future what to look for when getting a dog from a breeder!!
sorry for such a long post, like i said i dont have anyone else to turn to, thanks!!

I have found that if the post is not set in deep and firmly into the base of the ear and the ear is not pulled up nice and snug against the deeply set post while it is taped..........the overall slackness of the posting job will cause the pup to shake its head more than is usual for a posted pup.

Just been thinking a bit too....i was using the 3/4 backer rod and today i used the 1/2, and i was wondering if i should be using the 5/8 now that she is bigger, would that cause her to shake if the post is too small because it would be moving around in her ear...now that you mentioned it darkevs about it not being snug in her ear??
lots of sticky goop and head shaking are a few signs of an ear infection. Did your vet check her ears for an infection? I would not post until the ears have been examined.
MichelleAyrheart, pictures would help. :) of her ears posted and ........not posted. :)
Holy crap...3/4" backer rod is the problem...that's baseball bat barrel thickness (kidding). :D

Way too big.

I started with 5/8" and went down to 1/2"...much better imo. With two layers of duct tape around the rod and then the taping and back taping, you are actually pretty close to 5/8" total diameter.
i think i made a mistake lol, maybe its not 3/4 im not sure i just know its small, and i have another roll of smaller than the 5/8 and a roll of 5/8, i guess im just asking if i should be using the bigger 5/8 now that shes 4 months old?

I think her ears might have gotten wet and thats why the tape was all goopey on her ear, not sure...its not smelly or anything like that...i guess i will see what tomorrow brings, ive been checking her ears all day making sure there was nothing nasty on the post that i could see, if i have a problem i will end up taking her to the vet and making sure she doesnt have an infection or gettin her some meds if she does in fact have one..

I will take some pictures tomorrow and post them on here to see if im doing an ok job or not

I still have some old posts, mementos. The smallest is 3/8, next is 1/2 and last is 5/8. I quit posting at 7 months. At 5 months, 1/2 in should be right. I also backwrapped w/masking tape. You need to leave the last 1/2 inch of the post bare and taper to a blunt point. Then take your zonas and wrap the tapered base, one layer of zonas, being sure to cover the edge of the paper tape so it doesnt rub the skin inside the ear. It would also help if you put a very light dusting of BFI medicated powder into the ear where the post fits. Dont put a bunch into the ear canal! The posts should be snug but not tight or too loose. You can also powder the back, fur side, of the ears, dust off excess, then tape, to prevent pulling out so much fur when you remove the tape. Horsemans Dream, at your local farm or horse supply store, is great to rub on raw or sore spots. Wonderful stuff for chapped hands or areas, too.

Now that you mention it Linda 3/8 is what i meant, and then used the 1/2 today, i was putting 3 layers of duct tape and then wrapping and back wrapping in zonas tape , i left about an inch maybe less of just the backer rod and tapered it at the bottom, are you saying to tape the base of the post like the part thats tapered cover that in the zonas tape as well or just leave it as the plain backer rod?
It will probably be okay since you backwrapped with zonas and it will be softer than the masking/paper tape. Keep an eye out for sore places that might alert you to needing to tape over where the back wrapped zonas tape ends at the bottom of the backer rod.

He may still be a little young for the 1/2 inch which gets a whole lot bigger by the time you get thru wrapping it in two kinds of tape.:) Just watch and see how he does.
Thanks Linda, i went to the vet yesterdy and no infection or anything in her ears, so i came home and posted her ears, i tried it a little different and shes not shaking at all really, every once and a while but nothing like before, i used the 1/2 and it seems much better than the 3/8 it fits a lot better in her ears, not too small, not too big!!!
