More ear problems!! :(

Sounds like rubbing irritation. Many on here will religiously recommend tapes that aren't very sticky. Not that that is a bad thing, but if the posting isn't done in a secure enough fashion, they will rub against the ears, and that friction is what will cause the irritation.

To me, using the terms red and raw is from rubbing irritation. Gotta make sure the posts are secure to the ear.

Take the sticky side of your zonas tape and rub it on your arm for a bit, you'll see the irritation.

You can either help protect the ears before posting, maybe some cornstarch powder or some type of zinc oxide, or you can try gluing. With the skin glue there is no rubbing. Only real downfall is it is a bit messier to do and takes longer to clean the ears once changing posts. Slight upside is the glue buys you a few more days for posting.

My pup was on a 10 day rotation, sometimes a day or two less because he plays so hard with the other dogs. My pup is also right around 4.5 months old and his ears are done. I think I posted him maybe 4 times the entire time, from the very 1st on 8-10-11 til now. Once the glue on the tape became worn out and the posts started popping out of his ears, I removed the posts, cleaned the ears and left them unposted for a day or two, then reposted.

A lot of people will freak out and say the ears must not be left unposted for more than 20-30 minutes or whatever the norm around here is, but the vet who did my boys crop (medium) told me to do it that way. I followed the vets instructions and not even 1.5 months later I am done with the main posting.

Her ears werent real badly irritated, just a few spots and i noticed when i changed her posts before there was lots of sticky goop on her ears, i ended up posting her ears today with the zonas tape to see if that made a difference, she is shaking her head still a bit every once and a while, i know i didnt tape too tight im so nervous about that so its probably too loose half the time. Her ears didnt look really raw or irritated today when i looked thats why i decided to post them back up, one ear stands pretty good and the other was flopped over, i just dont know what to do anymore, i dont want her to keep shaking her head, i feel bad for her...i guess well see how she does, if she keeps shaking by tomorrow i guess ill take the posts out to see whats wrong, thanks everyone for all your replies, im totally alone on this i didnt find this site until after i already bought my girl....needless to say her breeder was deffinatley a byb i wish i knew then what i do now, but a little too late, only thing i can do is move on and know in the future what to look for when getting a dog from a breeder!!

I still have some old posts, mementos. The smallest is 3/8, next is 1/2 and last is 5/8. I quit posting at 7 months. At 5 months, 1/2 in should be right. I also backwrapped w/masking tape. You need to leave the last 1/2 inch of the post bare and taper to a blunt point. Then take your zonas and wrap the tapered base, one layer of zonas, being sure to cover the edge of the paper tape so it doesnt rub the skin inside the ear. It would also help if you put a very light dusting of BFI medicated powder into the ear where the post fits. Dont put a bunch into the ear canal! The posts should be snug but not tight or too loose. You can also powder the back, fur side, of the ears, dust off excess, then tape, to prevent pulling out so much fur when you remove the tape. Horsemans Dream, at your local farm or horse supply store, is great to rub on raw or sore spots. Wonderful stuff for chapped hands or areas, too.
