Meet Ava

Today we got Ava from a shelter. I'm thinking that maybe she's mixed with something because her head seems a little small compared to her body. She's 2 years old. She is sweet as ever. Her living conditions were not so great. The hair under her neck is gone, not sure if it will grow back. There were two collars on her neck, one of them was metal which was probably rubbing against her neck. They kept her tied to the pool table most of the day. She has whip worms which she was treated this morning with Inceptor, so she will go potty in a separate area from the other dogs. I'm not so sure on her color. Her head looks red, but the rest of her body look dark. Also, the hair on her head feels soft like it should, but from the neck down feels very rough. I'm sure she was not on the best food either. She is 64lbs.
Also there is a bone in the back of her head that is showing. Does anyone know why?

Aww...she's a beauty!! She has lovely eyes. I'm not sure what the bone would be. Are you taking her for a vet check soon?? That would be something to ask the vet about. Enjoy her!!:butfly:

Thanks for rescuing! I think she is purebred Doberbeauty--maybe not from the best breeder though. I can't believe someone could have treated her so poorly :(

We have the same first name and last initial ;)

I'm wondering why such a difference in the hair on her head and the hair on her body. Maybe it's the worms.

Hello and Welcome to Doberman Talk!!!

SHe looks ALL Dobie to me! A Beauty Red and Tan she is! :)

Her coat should improve with an improved diet and care, attention and lots of love! :)

The bump..............the bump of knowledge I call it! Some dobes have a more prominent one than others.

Bless you for choosing to adopt and not shop for a Dobie!

Love the fiesty look in your girls eye, she is a thinker and I bet she will be a fast learner too once she bonds with you!

Hugz to a very pretty DoberGirl named Ava!

She looks like a purebred Dobe to me. A poor quality diet can, as you suspect, cause poor quality fur. Just keep her on a good quality food and within a growth cycle or two, better quality fur will replace the poor coat.

Thanks for adopting a "repurposed" Doberman!:wavey:

I'm sure she will be a quick learner. The only command she knows is to sit. How early is to early to start training a rescue? She jumps up on us.

Training will help with the bonding. ARe you familiar with training dogs?

Dobes are very smart and are excellent problem solvers..........which means, you must be able to outsmart them and outthink them. :)

BUT, they are also very sensitive dogs and too hard a hand or repetitve commands that you do not back up, will get you no where with them. :)

Is there anyone in your area giving basic obedience lessons?

Agree - purebred red girl. Thank you for giving her a home.

One of my favorite training sites is Kikopup's Youtube channel: WHO IS KIKOPUP? Introduction - YouTube I find her to be a fantastic trainer, very easy to follow.

There are different types of training. Examples are, "house manners", basic obedience, and specialized training (assistance dog, personal protection, tracking, etc).

The good news is, her knowing "sit" means you've won half the battle, as you can build on that behavior to teach others. For example, you can attach a short "pull-tab" leash to her collar and use that to move her off you when she jumps, but remember to combine it with the "Sit" command and then reward her for sitting.

You can start today with house manners and after the honeymoon period you can start basic obedience. Here's a very brief article about the post-adoption honeymoon period: Bringing your new pet home.

Thanks for all of your responses. Ava is my 2nd dobe. I also have Bruce who is 14 months old. I will take the next several days to see if they can get along. I don't think she has been socialized with other dogs. I am hoping for the best.

What a pretty red girl! I call the bump you can see on some dogs' head a "smart" bump. Hans has it...his was like a horn when he was a puppy...maybe that's why he likes to act like a bull.

Very lovely red girl...looks purebread to me... just needs better nutrition, to fix the hair and put a few lbs. on (doesn't look small to me).

My current dobe girl, has the pronounced "brain bump"...and she is very smart.

Bless you for giving her a loving home and a second chance...mental stimulation while game playing w/toys (eg. fetch, tug of war, hide&seek, gonna get you, etc.) will get the most, out of your girl plus general OB.

Here's Oliver's bump, I call him my little pin head. Sometimes I think his whole brain is in this spot. Obviously, since she has one, it must mean they come from some kind of royalty. lol

I agree she looks like a purebred dobergirl. I am sure her coat will improve witha goos diet and maybe a deworming. If not I would have her thyroid checked just to be sure all is ok. Good luck with her and keep the pictures coming.
