Hi I'm new to Dobies, and would appreciate any feedback or preference on male or females? Thanks...Joe.

Love both, but have a female because I wanted the slightly smaller size.
I have an affinity towards males no matter what breed. I have a male and will get a female next time.

I have a male, will probably get a female rescue later (few years) I have never owned a female, but I have heard around here that they tend to be more "sly" or "sneaky" :)
I always thought I would want a female dobie. Only because I like to rub my pets bellies. (you know....the male anatomy gets in the way of a great belly rub!) But, when Rudi and I met it was love at first site! Since he hates to roll over on his back he doesn't get much belly rubbin. So it all worked out. I would like to get a black female in the future. But, Rudi is such a momma's boy. And I love my BIG BOY!

While I love my bitches, if I could only have one doberman, it would be a male.

But I think many times the best matches are with dogs of the opposite gender to the owner..there's some kind of chemistry thing that goes on.
I always had males dogs,(labs, Newfs, dobes) till Molly. I don't really care about the gender - I am more interested in personality. there's pro's and cons to both sexes IMO

interesting point Murraydobe, both my doberboys, were really mamma's boys

Well not sure where i stand here!!my four girls keep me pretty busy but i would still like a male to bond with, whatever happens, my next Dobe will be a male, although from what experience i have with males they are a little more immature than the girls. Now i've started something, all the women on here will be saying"ain't that the truth and not only in the dog world"!!! :)
The dobe who made me fall in love with the breed was a male. I loved his temperment and thought he was so great. He was such a velcro dog and a momma's boy. I think I'll probably go with a male because of this.
When I was looking for my Dobie (my first), I asked the same question and most of the breeders I contacted suggested I get a female. Still not quite sure why it is thought that females are more suitable for first time owners but that's the advice I was given. Unfortunately, with no experience with males I cannot validate that advice.
Now I cannot imagine life without my female dobe!
I guess it really depends on the dobe. Rudi has made an excellent first Dobie for me.
I mean, HEY, look at the abuse he takes on a daily basis in my pic below!

I guess it's kind of like when you have your first child......the first one is the best and then the second one you think, "what have we done, we had it so good before!" But, you love them all!
This is a hard question. I have had all bitches except for Copper, our male lab who is a sweetheart. My daughter has a male dobe and he is so good.
I think the females rule the roost over the males, probably in all species--thought I would stir the pot a little:), but I can`t say they are sly or sneaky. They are just as sweet as the males.
I could see myself having a male if we didn`t have Copper (I can`t believe I said that--don`t let my hubby read that) I have to recite everynight no more pets. He thinks 6 is enough--2 dogs 4 cats. I wonder if fish would count?
I think it is totally on the puppy's pupernality (my little play on PERSONality).
My pups seem to buck the trend of males being momma's boys. My female is the one that is more velcro. So it depends on what the puppy turns out to be, just like a human child. You don't know what it is gonna turn out to be until it is "all gronws up."

I agree. I love both very much :)

Have found this to be true, GENERALLY.

Females tend to be smaller, easier to handle, and less likely to be dog aggressive (a natural tendency in the Dobe breed that sometimes happens in males towards other males, intact or not).

Dobermans in general are very velcro, both genders. I find I can't go anywhere with them following me, lol. They always like to know where I am and want to cuddle when taking naps or sleeping. Both females and males make great pets, but it really does depend on individual personality and the personality of the family or owner too.
I'll have to agree again with Acooper as the females seem to be sly or sneaky, at least Roxy is and it drives Gaston nuts.
Gosh, good question that I have even ask myself for future choices.

My two are 8 months apart, the female being the oldest. She is all about business and definitely a Momma's girl. My male is laid back and really goofy (I mean realllllllllly goofy, not sure he would even register on an IQ scale) yet he gets down to business when he feels the need and he is still a pup at 1 year old. But ya know, he is the sweetest sweetest boy. I don't think I could ask for a sweeter personality in a dog.

Though I love both mine equally I would have to say that I just like the female gender for several reasons. To me they are cleaner and that has been my experience for many years. No matter how much I clean after my boy he stinks. I am sure that is not everyone's experience and maybe something that is an individual problem with mine but he is not the only male I have had with a smelly problem. He is neutered btw. My female doesn't stink. In all the dogs I have ever had since a child, the females have seemed to be cleaner in that aspect.

So my choice is definitely female and most likely Nash will be my last male but nothing is written in stone.

interesting comment about (not so) little Nash stinking. I marvel at how good all my dobes have smelled. one of my labs reeked (had exema and that didn't help)

I've never really had very stinky dogs, so I am very glad about that. But really if you dont want your stinky boy, I will definately take nash, really!:boldblue:
