My family and I are getting ready to purchase a Dobe for our home.

The need/want for our Dobe would be 2 part.

1. The 1st and foremost would be to invest a lot of time into the tracking aspect of the breed. I have trained and competed with Beagles for many years in scent competition and would like to try my hand at scenting/tracking with a Dobe.

2. As a side note, my son (only 9) has expressed interest in the agility side of the breed. I highly promote this type of commitment and have the room in my yard to set up an agility course.
If for nothing else, it would provide exercise and stimulation for both the dog and my family.

So, the question is can anyone suggest a reputable breeder in the NJ/PA/DE/NY area who may specialize in scent/tracking stock?

Thanks in advance. Great site here, most appreciated.

There are several breeders that would probably fit what you are looking for - some do shutzhund which has a tracking component and some just have good working attitudes. You might try Susan Miller of Catawba Dobermans, Sharon Marinelli of Sharjet Dobermans - those are two off the top of my head that do a lot of work beyond the conformation ring.

I don't think you are going to find a breeder who actually specializes in breeding dogs for tracking in Dobermans.

But I've played around with training my Dobes for tracking--of the four that I worked with one was a very good tracker--dedicated, learned quickly and was an honest tracker. Two were fairly good at it but any scent hound would have made them look like pikers. And one was more interested in crittering than actually tracking.

I'd be inclined to check out the breeders that Fitzmar Dobermans mentioned. I'd also check the AKC site for the tracking clubs that are in your area and talk to the people in them to see if anyone is working a Doberman and see where they got their Dobe. But tracking ability doesn't seem to be consistent in Dobes--probably because they are not specifically bred to be hard wired to track the way the scenting hounds are.
