I'm new to the forum and have really learned a lot about what to look for in a breeder from this site. I am looking for a reputable breeder in the Southern Maryland Area. I had a boxer for 8 1/2 yrs before he passed of cancer. I am looking to do tracking and agility with any Doberman I get. Because I don't have an unlimited budget, is it unreasonable to think that I can get a cropped and docked puppy in th $2500 range. If it is I will focus on looking into rescuing a doberman. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, thanks and kudos to you forgoing your research. You should get some answers here. I live on the other side of the country (Pacific NW) soI can't specifically help you in a breeder search.
I have also owned Boxer dogs as well as my Dobe boys. Just a heads up... They are hugely different in innate personalities, temperaments, trainability and needs. I really like both breeds, but at some point I fell in love with the Doberman breed. Stuck for life, I guess.

After searching the forum with the right query, I found the answer to my question. The answer - $2500 is not out of the realm of possibility.
Price is the least of my concern right now. As tempting as it is, if price was my focus I would have had a dog "yesterday". To convince my lovely wife on the price, since she's a certifiedbean counter/accountant, I've been telling her that we either pay now or pay later. Either way we are going to pay.
When I first decided to take a look at the Doberman as a potential addition to my family, I came in a little cocky thinking that it would be easy to find a good one whenever I wanted one. I've been humbled as a result of what I've learned on this forum and my search for a breeder. I've reached out to a few breeders so far - not so much the price, but timing seems to be one of the highly weighted variables in my dobe pup acquisition equation. I've spoken with a few breeders and asked for health testing and pedigree information (to see the bloodlines), only to be let down and felt like they betraying the breed with breeding bloodlines known for DCM or temperment issues. I spoke with a breeder whose dam of the litter was health tested but when I asked about the sire she said that no health testing was done. All I could think was "why would she do that"? and "what in the world is she doing"? I have learned that these people are referred to as greeders on this site. Maybe I'm expecting too much...In the meantime I'll keep conducting my research and exercise patience.

It's not unreasonable but not many sell for that price that are of good quality. Puppies are expensive. Lucky for you Sharjet is in New Jersey, near Philadelphia, and she sells for around that price. I believe she may have a litter in the early fall/late summer but I'm not sure. Actually she has a 1 year old girl right now that was returned that would be FABULOUS at agility. Are you wanting only cropped ears or does it not matter?

Kudos to you for doing your research and searching for a good breeder. You’ll get great recommendations from folks here and you can also try the Facebook group Doberman Pinscher breeder listings. You’ve already realized it’s goung to be a wait (I waited 18 months for my current pup, her show Home fell through), $2500 isn’t unreasonable but you may want to take the time you’re waiting to stack away a bit more money in case a pup comes along that’s more. I will tell you that the average price right now in your area (I'm in SE Pennsylvania ) is probably more like $3000 from a really good breeder. It is not out of the realm of possibilities that you will find one for $2500.... but I'd be prepared to spend a little bit more.
