Looking for a 2nd pup to spoil

Hi all,

I would greatly appreciate any information on a doberman breeder in NY (or an a state that's day trip worth of driving from NY, NY) Also a breeder that does not have a provision requiring to crop the puppy's ears.

I'm looking for a male puppy doberman, uncropped ears, preferably black/rust or a dark fawn/rust because my current girl is red/rust and it'd be nice to have a little variety. He's going to be spoiled as an additional family member, not a show dog; and reduce my guilt when I leave my Hera at home.

I've been looking everywhere, and it's just so hard to tell online who is genuine and has a track record of healthy pups. And unfortunately I don't have time to drive hours visiting different breeder (although I'd love to) I'm hoping this forum has more industry knowledge and point me in the right direction.

Please advise. Thank you!!

Sharon Marinelli (Sharjet) will allow for natural ears. You can find her information and other breeders on the DPCA website under breeder referral. ON that same website you can also find local clubs you can call and ask about breeders that aren't listed that might have pups soon.

I will warn you when you request a puppy be left natural you'll be getting the puppy that is the MOST obvious pet. My personal preference is to get the best dobe that I can.

Because our breed standard calls for a cropped ear in this country, it's much harder to find a quality breeder that will leave the ears natural for you. It can be done, but it's likely you will need to expand your search farther than your immediate area, and probably expand your wait time. If you're willing to do that, I think we can come up with some breeders for you to contact. There are now some good, ethical breeders that are willing to leave pups uncropped for people that have a track record of owning Dobermans.

As mentioned, it's hard to find a good breeder willing to leave the ears natural. It's also hard to find a good breeder with dilutes. Combine the two... well, the odds of finding what you want are astronomical.

Have you considered looking into getting a rescue?

I understand, health is my main concern for the new pup which is why I'm looking at breeders than pet stores or BYBs. I just prefer natural ears because of my own ethical beliefs and I have found that it is going against breeder requirements -- so the search for a pup has been a very very slow process. I don't think cropping dobermans is wrong or anything, it's just a result of my experiences. I live in NYC and I've worked with a lot of animals that have cropped ears, who shouldn't have cropped ears; and some just look butchered. It's heartbreaking. If my dobies aren't going into shows, I don't find it necessary to crop my pets.

Of course life is not without a sense of irony, and my dog breed has cropped ears as part of its standard.

I just can't bring myself to crop my doberman ears without feeling like a hypocrite. I'll feel like I'm betraying all of those dogs.. (and cats, unbelievably - there are some messed up people out there)

Yes, the search for quality dobermans without the crop ear req has been tedious. I'm really looking for a black/rust, I underlined "dark" because I'm not fond of very light fawns (wary of health/skin issues) but I didn't want to rule fawn out for anyone replying because I'm still a fan.

I have considered a rescue, but I've always planned on 2 dobermans as permanent family pets first. And then when they're both adults, start fostering rescues rather than adopting because I live in NY, and the ability to foster pets has greater impact than adopting because it frees up space and socializes the dog for their forever home. NYC has a lot of rescues, I feel if I foster I'll make more of difference than just one adoption. (Of course knowing me, I'm sure there will be rescue I fall in love with and keep anyway)

I also have a soft spot for pitbulls, because my brother used to have one - sweetest sack of muscles ever. And you can imagine how many there pit rescues there are in the NY area; if I can get just 4 or more of them in forever homes I'll be able to feel like I've made a difference.

I've only heard of Sharon leaving one puppy natural, and there were some reasons for it. The puppy went to someone she knew well. I don't think she makes a habit of selling uncrossed puppies.... and I see a lot of her litters since her house is where we have our club meetings (Quaker City DPC)

A puppy from a good breeder wouldn't have a butchered crop, but it might not be a style you like.

Sharon's puppies come home with gorgeous crops. I'm a bit of a fan. Her dogs are literally nothing like BYB trash from the region.

If you want a nice puppy I wouldn't let the crop or no crop thing deter you from going with an excellent breeder. This is a cropped and docked breed and most preservation breeders want to keep it that way. They are proud of every puppy they produce and want them all to be great representatives of their breeding program and the breed as a whole.

While I can respect your beliefs, I'd also urge you to do some research on quality crops. Puppies cropped at a reputable cropping vet don't have pain, and come home happy and are playing with their siblings. There's a world of difference. Consider that the surgery we do on dogs to spay and neuter them is far more invasive than a cropping surgery. Dogs from ethical breeders have beautiful ears that represent our breed. It's no more a betrayal of your dog to crop their ears than it is to spay a bitch.

Seconding everything everyone else has said. That being said if you are still dead set on getting an uncropped pup, consider looking at breeders in Ontario, or maybe even Quebec depending on what you consider a day trip. The standard in Canada has always allowed for uncropped ears and while not all Canadian breeders will leave pups uncropped it's much easier to find a reputable one that will, as opposed to an American breeder. As with any American breeder do your homework, and insist on seeing health test results/proof of health testing.
