Well, I know we're not all breeders, but let's pretend we're all breeders (or if you are, no pretending to be had! LOL) and yes, for the sake of time, we all title, health test, and breed a minimum amount of litters a year, etc... teehee

Come up with themes for litter names!!! Who knows, maybe a REAL breeder will like some of the themes! Even give examples (no matter how dumb) just to get your point across if you want ;)

Me, personally, I like......

-Alliterations
-Classic rock albums
-Song lyrics (one song, pick lyrics from the one song)
-Paint colors (we all know how weird those interior paint names can be)
-Phrases in Latin!

And MOST OF ALL.....
ANAGRAMS!!!!! (you know, when you take a word and rearrange letters to make new words)

football teams
sports cars
types of wine
types of scotch
science based stuff ( maybe enzymes? yeah.. i'm a nerd...)

julia, i loved kaleb's litter's beatles theme. I love the rock n roll themes...maybe rolling stones would be a good one. Jumpin' jack flash, brown sugar, gimme shelter, etc...sounds cool! For me, i'm a huge dave matthews band fan, so i would like DMB songs too.
I've always said if i got to pick my puppies AKC name it would either be "Too cool Queenie" or "Hollywood Bitch", after the Stone Temple Pilots. I also like "Me and Bobby Mcgee"

...whoa, sorry i went on a tangent there.

ive got litter upon litter of themes already picked. in fact, ive got enough names picked out to name more dogs than i could ever own.

i cant share them, though... or id have to kill you.

seriously - ive got a word document of about 400 names - i think of them, write them down, and save them just in case they will work for my next dog. of course, some people think they are stupid, but i like weird and unusual names. just yesterday that stupid blackstreet song came on "no diggity"... and lydia and i decided that
"bowie's the way you work it" would be a great name for a dog...

all my themes are pretty much song titles though. thats my THING.

Oh my. I thought I was the only one.

Only my doc is nearly 500 names long now, and most of them are intended for horses. Some would translate nicely to show names for dogs, too, though.

I do song themes a lot, but I also really, really like to use plays on words, and just anything that sounds cool.

One group of horse names I did recently is seismic, and I'll go ahead and give it away, though I will, like Doberkim, also have to kill, if someone uses without crediting. (I was thinking of big ol' warmbloods, for these names.)

So...Continental Drift. Tectonic. Aftershock. Epicenter.

For dogs, who usually have longer show names than horses, I might add Off the Richter Scale. Seismic Boom, maybe? Hehe.

Velma...Seize the Hour. Momentous Hour. All Hours, or Out til All Hours. (Witching Hour prolly too obvious, and maybe used, due to the Witch line, huh?)

Wee Hours, if you decide to do a Minpin, ha!
Gimme a bit, and I can help come up with some better hour theme names. I love doing this stuff.

I LOVE this thread!! I go nuts when I have a litter trying to find a theme that hasn't been done over and over. Its NOT easy!
I guess my favorite is the litter Alex came from (of course there were only 3 so we didn't get to use many). It was the Tomato litter. How many people do you know that have named their puppies after tomatoes??? I love original and different.
I can never think of anything new. Not much imagination I guess. But I would love ideas so keep them coming!
Guilty I think is cute...Flight risk. She was from a friends "F" litter.
My very first litter was fancy cars. I loved the name I used. Bugatti
Our old boy Jet was fighter jets and such. Stealth Mirage
Then there was the casino litter Beau Rivage.
Holli came from a car litter cause her dad was Hot Rod. She is Hotrod Holli, her brother...custom coupe
Another friend had a cereal litter. Kaptain Krunch, Special K, Kaboom, Sugar Crisp, Cookie Crisp, Just Right.
The two little puppies from our frozen Jet need names, their mom is sugar Crisp (Sugar). I nick named the little red girl Splenda.
Come on people. Names!!!!

I got borde at work on day and did this same thing.....

Famous drinks (example shaken not stirred - martini)
Coffee (example quad shot)
Ships (example Red October)
Monsters (Lock Ness)
Rush albums (example exit stage left)

I came up with at least three names for each too....... I was very not busy can you tell.

I work in higher ed, so I immediately think of college & university names (Dobes are super-smart dogs, after all)

Also:
Presidents
Famous American battles (a Revolutionary War litter if it were born in July)
Dinosaurs (who wouldn't want a dog named T-Rex??)
Character names from "The Matrix" (lots of cool names to choose from)
Superheroes

And yes, I'm a dork.

I don't always do themes but I have been doing them more lately.

We had the "Late" litter in 2002, where everything about it was late. The 2 of them were Fashionably Late and Bettr Late Than Nevr.

Last year's registered names had to contain the word "Rock". My favourite belongs to one of the pet puppies -- Rock 'Em Sock 'Em. I thought mine was kind of clever - the sire's name is Max so my girl's name is Rock It To The Max, keeping in mind that her grandfather, my most favourite dog in the world, is Rocket so there's a play on his name, too.

This year's theme is so unbelievably mundane. Since it was an all-red litter, I just want the word "Red" to be in every registered name.

If we breed Shelby again, the theme is going to be "Lane". Her grandmother's name was Ellana, and she was called Laina (spelling as it was pronounced). I thought it would be nice to do the "Lane" theme as a tribute to her. I was very honoured to meet her when she was 14.

Like Kim, I've got a ton of them (themes and names) recorded for the future. Don't want to give them all away.

The one theme I am sick to death of is the Storm theme. Enough already!

I love this. Okay here are some themes that I think great names could be created from.

Queen song titles
Newspapers/Magazine names
Seasons
Birds of Prey
Movie titles
Perfumes
Types of rocks
Musical instruments
Video game titles
Temperatures
Poets
Ice cream flavours
Types of fabric
Types of fish

That's all i've got for now.

Queen song titles
That was exactly my answer. Crazy little thing, tee-hee. Anybody want to do this and name my little girl this? Don't all start figting over this now, LOL.

Sheer Heart Attack would not be good for a dobe, but...Stone Cold Crazy....

or maybe a crazy theme, with songs that have the word crazy in it. There are tons of them. Yea, so in order to not copy you I'll go with this.

My litter from last winter was the "minute" litter. Louise's registered name has the word "Moment", so I decided to follow a time theme for her litters. The next litter will all have the word "hour" in it. I have not even started a list yet - LOL!

It is nice to sometimes use something from one or both of the parents - whether it be from their registered name or call name. For example, I used something from both parents for Harvard's registered name. "Command" and "Minute" (the next logical step in time from moment) I will say that for some really popular sires, this has been overdone in a big way.

I do see some really neat names .... and some not so neat names. I've always liked Kim's Bowie theme :) Sometimes themes are so obscure to the general public that we don't even realize that there is a theme. I also have a hard time with themes that have very hard to pronounce words in them.... no-one knows how to say the name, so no one ever does!

The theme that I am using right now for all my dog name is

Masonic names or Biblical names.

Dog 1: Jakin Boaz
Dog 2: Solomon Boaz

Therefore, all of the dogs that I will have will resemble a Biblical or Masonic name until I run out of name :)

If one day, many years from now, I have a dog worthy of breeding, some litter theme ideas of mine are:

Cities/Towns in Mississippi (gotta show the love for the home state)
Civil War officers
Famous Racehorses
Bodies of Water (And if I keep one, I'm putting tchoutacabouffa in the name, for the Tchoutacabouffa River!!!)

JDD, Beau Rivage is an awesome name! I lived about 5 minutes away from the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS!

Don't forget Lake Cataouatche, and the Atchafalaya, Tchefuncte, and Ouachita Rivers in Louisiana and the Mattaponi and Pamunkey rivers in Virginia.

I don't know about you--but I think a dog named Pamunkey would be.......interesting.

How fun would this be . . . to get to name a litter.

I would choose

1. Fashion Houses: Dior, De La Renta, Vuitton, etc.
2. Royalty: De Bourbon, Conde, Tudors, etc.
3. Superheroes
4. Pirates
5. Mythical Creatures: Nessie, Pegasus, Centaur's etc.
6. Greek Heroes: Perseus, Hercules, Jason, etc.

Thanks for the creative thread! :)
