I am just curious to know, and I don't know if I am in the right forum, but why would someone join a Doberman Group and a Doberman Talk site and they don't own a Doberman? It just seems strange to me. I have a Dobe, rescue and a BT so I belong to groups associated with those breeds. It just does not make sense to me.:confused::confused::confused::confused:

1. Because they want to know more about dobermans before they make the decision to get one.
2. Because they think dobermans are beautiful and they want to see good pictures.
3. Because they want to know other people who mess with dobermans because those people are cool.
4. Because they like funny stories about animals and dobermans are fun to tell stories about.
5. Because..........

Sorry about the flippancy but......why wouldn't they want to sign up on a doberman forum? (and choice #1 is actually a VERY good reason to go to a dobe forum.)

I concur with melbrod #3. Doberman people are cool. Everyone wants to get close to the cool kids, right? Well, here they have arrived. And if they have a dobe, they have not only arrived, they have arrived IN STYLE!

Seriously, hopefully they are doing thoughtful research to determine if these awesome looking dogs realistically fit in their lifestyle.

But mostly cuz dobe peeps are cool!

There are some that had a/or several dobermans before and for whatever reason dont have one now. They do intend to have one when ready. Maybe they are grieving the loss of their last dog, dont own a home, finances arent ready, any number of reasons they havent bought another doberman yet. I was on doberman boards for 6/7 years before getting Parker. I did raise and show dobermans in the early 70s and still had knowledge I could pass on. Plus, I was getting updated information, checking out breeders, who had the style of dobermans I liked. Learned a lot about health issues and some lines to limit or avoid altogether. There is lot of information here to glean thru before buying a doberman. Kind of a neat place to hang out, too!:)

Because dobe puppies are great chick magnets, especially at the beach...lol.

Unlike a lot of other unrelated forums, there are manners here / respect for diverse opinions / many expert dog people.

Very active forums are more fun, than smaller ones.

I'm curious to know how you learned about the Dobe and BT breed before you decided on the breed?

With all of the info on the internet these days, it makes perfect sense to me. I was a member here... let's see... started April 2007, when I had two other older dogs. I brought Silas home June 2009. That is 2 years of membership prior to having a Doberman.

This forum helped me find certainty in my breed choice, helped me suck up TONS of knowledge, showed me so many great photos (some of which helped convince my husband about bringing a Doberman home as well, helped me learn to find a reputable breeder if I was going to go through a breeder, and also in the meantime I learned a lot about general dog training techniques, health issues, etc.

I applaud anyone and everyone who is willing to dive into research prior to bringing a dog home of any kind. What better way to do it than on an active dog forum?

I don't have a Doberman, I do love my sister's girl, Vegas- but I don't have one. I probably won't have a Doberman for another few years, but I've met some really amazing people who are very active in the breed on this site and I've met others as a result of being a member of this site.

I can say, without a doubt, when I bring home the perfect puppy from a wonderful breeder, it'll be because of all the breed forums I've been a part of and all of the great people I've met through them.

And I think this site is most useful for the people who come and bother to read BEFORE they bring home a puppy, instead of trying to figure everything out after they already have a puppy from a bad breeder.

I agree with all the above statements. Too often people purchase dogs and are unaware of what they are getting into. I myself do not yet own a Doberman but I am sure going to research as much as possible before I make this life changing decision. I have experience as a vet tech and I still am researching because there are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum and thank you for all your posts. So to answer the original question with a question why not join a forum such as this even if one does not own the breed yet? Good info can be found here, also what if you decide that maybe the breed is not for you at least that saves a pup from ending up in a shelter because the owner did not know what the heck they were getting into. That is just my opinion, life changing decisions need thought and research. Thanks again to all of you who have educated me on this breed I appreciate it.

I joined because I was researching google about cropping and it brought me to this forum and lurking on the forum was giving me way more knowledge then surfing hours at different websites. I had owned a Doberman before and was in the process of looking for another one and almost bought BYB Doberman. If I hadn't found this site and proceeded to buy the puppy then get on this site I would prob be filled with heart ache down the line because of bad breeding.

I joined because our rescue pup had markings like a Doberman, and though she may be part Dobe, but now we are pretty sure she is Rott/Lab mix. I still hang out here because there is a lot of great information that can be used for dogs in general, and there also may be a Dobe rescue in our future!

FWIW, I didn't read your OP as an attack. I interpreted it as curiousity, with perhaps a little confusion about non-Dobe owning members.

I joined when I was "between Dobes" because I love the breed. When I joined, I wasn't sure if I would ever get another one. Then a member posted that she couldn't keep her Dobe anymore (the breeder would not help) so I took him in.

The board also helped when I got two Dobes from a BYB off of CraigsList. (BYB was unloading an unsold blue pup and the red dam because he was moving and "couldn't take them".) I was put in touch with a rescue group that could take them.

I am a member of another breed forum because I am researching that breed. I am trying to decide if I want to get a show prospect. It will be a few years before I can do that, though. I was a member of another breed forum, but after several months, I decided that breed wasn't a good fit for me.

Finally, I love that this board has steered many people away from buying a BYB Dobe and towards getting one from an ethical breeder. Some members have chosen to forfeit their deposit on a BYB pup and instead get on a waiting list for a good quality pup.
