So if you look in the Dobe Rescue section you'll see a bit of how this girl came to be with me, but long story short, her original owner gave her up due to his new wife and her five children. He had owned this poor, eight year old girl since puppyhood! She was picked up by a woman who threw her outside all night and then given up by her because, "...she doesn't want to stay outside all night, she barks and wants to come in. My neighbors don't like her.." So now Huxley and I are fostering her and hoping we can get her a permanent home soon! (Be on the look out!)

She was very dirty and anxious when I picked her up, but she's been cleaned up and is doing well, considering.

We took her to the park early this morning in hopes that no other dogs would be there, and we were in luck. It gave her and Huxley a chance to bond a little bit with some room to run!

Supposedly the wife wasn't up front about her true feelings about the dog until she had a ring on her finger! She trained all of her 5 kids to despise dogs as well! I feel bad for the owner's daughter who grew up with ******* and has now lost her childhood dog, boy did she involuntarily enter into a family from hell. The man was also alarmed and pissed that the woman he gave ******* to a little over a week ago put her up on Craigslist for 80 bucks. She lied saying ******* would be a loved, indoor only dog..she had never stepped paw inside the new owner's house and they got tired of her crying at the door to come inside.

Pretty ****ty woman to pull that crap after she got the ring, I think if I was that guy Id have put the wife and 5 kids up for adoption and kept the dog! Glad you were there to help this beautiful dobe out and i hope she gets a good forever home with someone that knows dobes arent wired to stay outside all the time!!

Update on *******:

She's doing very well. Her and Huxley do much better together. She's a fantastic dog. I don't have to crate her or anything when I leave. She never gets into anything. Stays off the furniture, sleeps through the night, lets me know when she needs to go out, walks nicely on a leash. It's a real shame that she couldn't have lived our her life with her original family. I really don't understand why the woman couldn't just live with her for a few more years. She's a great dog. UGH! People can just be awful!

Anyhow, she is heartworm positive, but the doc says her lungs and heart sound great, and if we keep up with her HW prevention that it shouldn't really effect her more than her age already will considering it "normally takes 2-4 years for heartworm disease to set in". She really is amazingly active for her age. She's slow to move around in the house, but once we're outside she goes nuts! Keeps up with Huxley even!

I don't want to second guess your vet, but I'm kind of surprised they don't want to treat the heartworms. I just adopted Simon in May. He's also 8 years old, and was heartworm positive. We did the treatment and he's feeling so much better now. Why let her live with heartworm disease?

Any chance she'll end up staying with you?

And you know I really hope we can find her a great home, maybe an older couple. She's a great dog but it's a handful to have her and the puppy. Also I feel bad that ******* has to deal with Huxley all day long, I can tell she just wants to be a couch potato but Huxley won't leave her alone for two minutes to let her! It won't be the worst thing to happen though if there isn't anywhere else for her to go. I'm also in an apartment, which makes it worse. Hopefully I'll be able to get into a house in May. We'll see which way the wind takes us! We'll be at Pet Fest in Spring, TX this Sunday! Maybe we'll find someone who would like to have her. Keeping hopes up.

Simon did really well with his heartworm treatment. We were really careful with the activity restriction (basically crate rest, leashed for potty breaks, no walks, no playing, no nothing). He never had any of the side effects that some dogs have, and he had enough of a heartworm load that his heart and lungs showed some damage on the x-rays.

We followed the American Heartworm Society protocol, which is a month of doxycycline, continuing heartworm preventative as usual, and then the series of three injections.

Yes, it can be hard on them, but I think it's worse for them to carry damaging worms permanently.
