Hey,

I was just wondering if it is possible for a whisker to become ingrown. Simon and I were out playing today when I noticed he had a lump on his face. There was a white spot with something sticking out so I sat him down and pulled it out. Unfortunately I dropped it as soon as I pulled it out, but it was about an inch long or more and black like a whisker but much harder it seemed. The spot where it came out is in line with the rest of his whiskers. I put some peroxide on it and messed with it a bit more inside and something else came out, maybe a hair. He didn't seem in pain and rather enjoyed all the scratches to the face!! Didn't know if this was possible or if I should be worried about the lump...there hasn't been anything seeping out or anything.

Hmmm. That's a very good question. I really don't know the answer to that. Maybe Dobe Paws would know since she works at a vets office.

I had one on Raven before. My Vet said it is quite natural to happen sometime.. and to do just what you did..:jonkel:

That is very intresting. I never would have thought that they could get in-grown hairs.

Do most people shave the dobe muzzle or not? i know some believe dogs need to use them as "feelers" much like cats, but i'm not even sure that dogs do. Dobes definently have a more sleek appearance with ears, wiskers, and rear legs trimmed.

My show dog Tia suffers with this quite a lot i was advised to use a product called hibiscrub, which is what surgeons scrub their hands with but you have to dilute it quite a lot,there is also tea tree oil scrubs they are both basically antibacterials.And yes we do trim the whiskers and eyebrows of a dog prior to taking them into the ring,judges look at head shape and it gives the muzzle a cleaner outline.

I once had a dobe with a little piece of sticker stuck in the skin and it infected her in the muscle. I don't know why it couldn't happen to the face . all they did was what you did.

It's been my experience that dogs do use their whiskers as feelers. Watch a blind dog get around sometime. It's pretty amazing.

I've kept Lexus trimmed since she was about 3 months old, so she sits quite nicely for the clippers. I do all facial whiskers, the outside edge of her ears, and the spot on the tip of her tail that grows a little long on the bottom.

What a showgirl she is!
