Truthfully, our dogs learn to submit to a lot of strange human behaviours and it is pretty amazing how they adapt. My dogs submit to hugs, but never enjoy them. To a dog, hugging or putting your arm around them is a very aggressive thing ..... in the canine world. That they tolerate it and sometimes even learn that it is a positive thing is a testament to their adaptability to our world.
My dogs submit to children hugging them, but I can tell they don't like it. I do try to teach children not to hug dogs - especially if they don't know them. Innocent things like that is what gets a lot of kids bitten.
