I know this may sound like a silly question, but how often do y'all hug your Dobes, if at all, and do they like it?

Toro lets out the equivalent of a little doggie "sigh" when I wrap my arms around him and give him a gentle squeeze.

I read somewhere that dogs don't really "relate" to hugs by nature, but what if they're used to it from puppyhood?

I have always hugged Vegas. In fact he will walk up to me and put his head on my shoulder and rest it there till i put my arms around him. Its really sweet. I have NO DOUBT... he understands that its a sign of love im giving him.

Truthfully, our dogs learn to submit to a lot of strange human behaviours and it is pretty amazing how they adapt. My dogs submit to hugs, but never enjoy them. To a dog, hugging or putting your arm around them is a very aggressive thing ..... in the canine world. That they tolerate it and sometimes even learn that it is a positive thing is a testament to their adaptability to our world.

My dogs submit to children hugging them, but I can tell they don't like it. I do try to teach children not to hug dogs - especially if they don't know them. Innocent things like that is what gets a lot of kids bitten.

We hug ours. They will put their head on our shoulders and they like hugs - they like any attention =).

They put their ears back and lean into us. I wouldn't suggest strangers hug them though of course (common sense), but with their close and favorite people they don't mind at all. They sometimes give us nice hugs and love to be on our laps often, leaning on us, standing on our foot, etc.

Our female is really sweet and likes to give us hugs, when we get on our knees, sit down, or get on her eye level she snuggles up and stretches her front legs out on our shoulders and gives us kisses.

As a kid I used to ride my Dobermans like horses. They were good sports with kids.

if you ask Tucker for a hug he will press his head into your arm/leg/chest/lap/shoulder...where ever it is you have exposed for him to fit his fat head LOL
He seems to like getting hugged too...he kinda melts into us when we hug him and lets out the long deep sigh most of the time

Chi loves hugs - She leans into a hug and wraps her neck around my shoulder like she's hugging me back - more often than not, I have to push her off me LOL

Mine love to get hugs. Harmony rests her head behind yours when you hug her squeezing you. I think it is her hugging back. lol. Asher backs up between your legs and rests his body on your chest. That is his hint for hug me and pet me to death. He only gives me the eye when other people are around. Something about taking that macho male picture away infront of people. But he loves it. They have been cuddled on since puppyhood. Too much sometimes I fear.

yeah duchess loves hugs too...she will put her head over my shoulder...and give me kiss...usually if i hug her in a sitting postition she will flop to the ground on her side so i can lay down and hug her lol
from what I learned in my massage class...touch is the most important and the only sense things could not live without...so I try to pet and hug duchess alot....who knows maybe it makes them live longer

My Dobes love to be hugged and touched, they are very affectionate. Da'Kari will place her head over my shoulder also and lean against me and something else she loves to do is put her face into my face and give me kisses and recieve kisses. She is definitely an "in your face" Dobe. Nash loves to get hugs and give kisses too. They are the most affectionate dogs I have ever owned.

Depends on Java's mood. She is more of a snuggler than a hugger. Maintains a bit of distance between bodies if someone kneels in front and hugs her. But if she's on my lap (or rather, the front end of her is), she will allow me to wrap my arms around her below the collar and will lean into the hug.

When my husband comes home, she does her famous 'docking manoeuver' - the muzzle goes right between his legs just above knee level, and he rubs her shoulders. The snorting she makes is a riot, nub wagging all the while. (Does anyone else's Dobe do this??)

But one thing's for sure - Java has to always be w/in sight of, or even better, touch of one of us. If I'm at the sink, she will lay on the floor and Doberlean into the back of my legs. If I'm driving, she'll skooch as far forward as the harness will allow, put her head on the arm rest and nuzzle her nose into my ribcage. If she had her way, she'd be on my lap in the Explorer!

Yes Java'smom Grace does that with my husband, she "snorks" and sneezes and moans.

Most of mine have been the same way...being hugged is something they endure.

But that doesn't mean they haven't been highly affectionate dogs who enjoyed butt scratching, belly rubs, cuddling on the couch or in bed with you.

Hugging is something they've learned to endure from their goofy human counterparts Some poochies have gotten such a positive look on it, they just love it, Lexus adores being hugged and layed on (kids use her as a pillow), hehe, great thing about kids, your dog gets used to darn near everything, on the other hand, her mom, having grown up in a home where snuggling just isn't a common thing, clearly endures it, but doesn't care for it.

Rommel tolerates hugs I think. It really depends on his mood. He is more of a snuggler. He has to be touching me all the time, even if it is just the tip of an ear or a paw. But he doesnt like arms being wrapped around him unless he clearly comes into your arms. He is FOR SURE a head on shoulder dog though. He LOVES to rest his head on my shoulder and press his face against mine, he probably does it 10 times a day. He loves to rest his head in my lap,and he loves to give kisses. He would bathe me if i would let him. I use him as a pillow sometimes, or put my arm around him while he lays next to me, but not both around the neck, he will back up...usually. He is still a VERY loving affectionate dog though, just in other ways.

trike loves hugs, he knows it makes me happy too. i sit down on the floor with my arms outstreched and say "strike, huuuug" and he walks over and puts his head on my shoulder and waits for me to embrace him. its really sweet.

I hug Peaches all the time. She loves it. She will scoot closer to me and put her nose in my hair. Cole let me hug him, but I could tell he wasn't into it.
