I really need help with my Imformative Speech. I have no clue how to do it, nor does anyone in my class know what their doing either. Already asked them!
So i'm doing my I.S. on The Grimm Brothers.
For the speech, I have to:
1. Choose a topic
2. Create a purpose statement
3. Divide the body of your speech into three main areas(for example: chronologically, topically, or spacially)
4. Include facts and sources

Secondly, creat a strong introduction using the outline format below:
1. Introduction
A. Hook(quote, fact, statistic, ect..)- explain
B. Background information about your topic (brief)
C. Reveal supports
D. Thesis statement
(C and D may be combined into one)

Be sure to include transitions from idea to idea and to explain your thoughts.

Thirdly, find information to support your topic. Be thorough and specific, using plenty of facts and examples.

II. Body
A. Area 1 (ie. history, beginnings of, info about the area, ect..)
1. Facts
2. Facts
B. Area 2 (ie. Traditions, activities, ect..)
1. Facts
2. Facts
C. Area 3 (ie. Attractions, folk tales associated with, ect..)
1. Facts
2.

Lastly, create a conclusion that is memorable and that summarizes our points.
III Conclusion
A. Signal your conclusion (In conclusion,) and summarize main pints
B. Reference to introduction(bring it all together)
C. Psychologically close the speech (ie. Closing statement)

I remember I did my I.S. on BSL against Pits in Germany... I even took Storm with me as a prop :)

How long does this speech have to be? I'm assuming either 3 or 5 minutes...

You know you want to do your speech on the Grimm brothers but what about them? You could narrow it down so much that you speak only about Heath Ledgers performance in the new movie (he's so yummy :) ) I suggest picking out one or two facts and expounding on them. You want to present concise information and if you're topic is too broad, you'll either go way over on time or just confuse your listeners with too much info.
If it were my paper, I would start with a brief excerpt from Cinderella (an excerpt that you are sure that your audience will recognize). This will be your attention getter. You could then say... Although generations of children have been entertained by this fairy tale, not many know about the men behind it... Maybe even suggest somewhere that Walt Disney is not the author of it :)
I've never had much luck writing from an outline. Generally, I have an idea of what I want to write, come up with a title and then just go with it... If I must turn in an outline I will create one from what I've already written...

ex.

1. Choose a topic
The Bros. Grimm

2. Create a purpose statement
To inform audience of the contributions made to the literary community by the Bros. Grimm

3. Divide the body of your speech into three main areas(for example: chronologically, topically, or spacially)

Cinderella

Rumplestilskin

Snow White (I think they wrote that anyway :) )

(Try to find their inspiration to write these stories or maybe you could concentrate on the community reaction to them both when published and now)

4. Include facts and sources

Good luck and let us know how you do :)
