Did anyone's Homeowners insurance ever check with the AKC or local dog licence to see if they had a Dobie? My hubby is paranoid that we will be dropped if they find out we own Petey. Such a bad ass he is....licks every one to death!

I've never heard of an insurance company going as far as to check with the AKC or local licensing agency. Are dobes on the list for your insurance carrier?

That would be above and beyond most insurance agents duty. I highly doubt that would ever happen. I mean if they asked you and you didn't tell them about petey.........something happens, they won't have to pay out, so what do they care??

Our insurance agent has never once asked, and honestly I have never asked him either. So I don't know where that leaves us :) Part of me wants to ask, but the other part is afraid of the answer. This is the same insurance man that my mother/father in law have + both my husbands sets of grandparents have, and he handles our cars/life/house all three. So if I ask and get a bad answer, switching would be a nightmare for more than one reason.

What to do, what to do ;)

I've asked our carrier and they told me that only pits, chow & rotties were not allowed. Here we go again breed specific crap, don't get me started!!!!!
How long until it hits our breed with this carrier?

Many many carriers don't allow Dobies. I found 5 that didn't when I was shopping for homeowners insurance. I went with the company that did not ask me if I had dogs.

I don't think any insurance agent has the time to call the AKC or anything like that. I wouldn't worry about that. If anything, they may do an annual outdoor inspection.

We have had the same company for a very long time, they handle our business as well as our personal Insurance. Hubby called another company and asked them to price out all our personal insurance, car, umbrella and home owners. That agent asked my hubby if we had a dog, and not knowing anything about breed discrimination....we had Weims before, hubby told him about Petey, the agent told us our current insurance would not write us a policy now. My hubby freaked out! Because we have 4 teenage sons our auto insurance is through the roof, and won't be getting better for a very long time. The last thing we need is for the homeowners and umbrella to be higher! With all that Petey is costing me.....he has become my hobby!

State Farm does not have a black list. All they want to know is if the dog has ever bitten anyone.

We had Nationwide for about 12 years for everything: home/cars/boat(when we had one in Florida). But they only grandfathered us in with the Dobermans. When we bought this house, I switched to State Farm for everything and told both State Farm AND Nationwide why I switched in writing. Nationwide has since installed an exception for blacklisted dogs IF they have a CGC (I don't think that this is true in every state, but I believe it is in PA)

I know a lot of people go by the if they don't ask, don't tell policy. I personally would rather be open with my agent. They are working for me, not against me. If I hide something that they have a ban on or a policy against, it will hurt me in the long run. Granted I don't *think* my dogs would act out on someone if I was home, but you can never tell what a dog will truely do. They don't rationalize like we do. If they did do something, I would really be up a creek when my insurance drops me and refused to pay. I have heard of them dropping by to check on things. I wouldn't want to take the risk of them finding a dog that wasn't supposed to be there.
