Greetings all,

I just found the forum yesterday. I'm not currently owned by a Doberman but hope to be soon. We're just in the starting stages of looking for a breeder and finding the right puppy. I figured this was a great place to start, reading the words of wisdom of those already owned by a Dobie. Do dogs own people the same way cats do? I am currently owned by 3 cats. Adding a puppy to the mix will be, um, exciting to say the least

I haven't had a dog in years and I dearly miss my (dumb as a box of rocks but as lovable as they get) Lab/Golden mix. Before Clancey (the Lab/Golden mix) I had an Old English Sheepdog and a wild little mixed breed. That little mixed breed was nuts and a whole lot of fun. I have experience as a dog owner and some experience with larger stronger breeds. Rags, the Sheepdog, was 120 pounds and fully capable of dragging me down the street if he wanted to. He was a very amiable dog and never did try, thank goodness.

I'm looking forawrd to reading about your Dobies and learning more about the breed. I've been doing a lot of research on the breed over the years, but as owners, you can tell me more than books and web sites ever could.

Welcome and you are soooooo smart to learn all you can before you get your baby! Read all you can about the breed, and try to find the best dog you can. You should look for a breeder who shows their dogs and health tests them for everything under the sun. Both parents should be titled and finished. Even if you want a "pet quality dog" show breeders always have them, because not all pups are show quality! Now all this being said.....I did none of this....and hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the ass!

Also.....lots of beautiful rescues out there....I still go on Petfinders every single week and look at all the dogs/puppies that need a home. My last three dogs were all rescues, all were so special.

Thanks :) We did a lot of research on breeders before we got our beautiful Bengal and will absolutely do the same for a Doberman. We went to cat shows, met with breeders and saw their cats before picking one that suited us. When the day came to go pick up our kitten, a different kitten chose us instead  How could I say no to such a darling kitten who chose me to be his "mother"? He's the best cat ever, a combination of terrier-like stubborness and velcro loving purring ball of cat love). I hope to have a similar experience when getting a new puppy.

I know a fair amount about the breed but really there's no better way to learn than to talk to people with experience.

This is one of the breeders we're thinking about. I'm trying to plan a visit out to her kennel to meet with her and the dogs soon. They are some magnificant looking dogs.

And because everyone here loves pictures and because I did brag about my Bengal boy a bit, here are some pictures of Milo :)

Thanks :) He's every bit as sweet and devilish as he looks. I think he thinks he's a dog actually. He follows me everywhere much like a puppy would. He has to know what I'm doing at all times. He even demands to play fetch.
Welcome from NJ as well!

Found our girl from researching breeders w/in DPCA. Have also been told that some shelters (East Hanover is one) will put you on a call list for a $25 donation - sometimes people find that a Dobe pup just isn't for them. This is the route I am considering for our next Dobe, altho have to be concerned about possible health issues down the road since I won't know a shelter pup's genetic health history. Have to weigh pros and cons of that leap of faith.

I'm sure you know that Dobes are the sharpest tools in the shed, so be prepared for a puppy that is sometimes too smart for its own good!

Good luck and keep us posted!
Welcome to the forum from the U.K.
Hello :wavey: & welcome from Southern Indiana!!

LOL, Love the pic of the kitty in the tree!!
Welcome to DT from NJ! I know Betty and her dogs. She has great dogs. There are quite a few breeders in the area (I include PA as in the area as I went out to Dover for my boy.)
Thanks for the welcome everyone :)

I'm hearing a lot of good things about Betty and her dogs. Just what I wanted to hear. :D It just confirms my gut feeling that she's the one to go with. Providing that we can meet each other's needs :)
The puppies on there are soooo cute! I love the Reds!
