My puppy is currently 7 months old male, and I have had him ever since he was 11 weeks. I have been feeding him innova large breed puppy food ever since. He took a while to get used to it and was fine. but for a while now he will have nice hard stools and then liquid/ diarrhea in the same day. he sometimes will throw up at night. This has been going on for a while, but him throwing up is recently new. Is this the food? I took him to the vet and his fecal came out good. no parasites. Im starting to get worried. Is this behavior normal?? Please help i need all the suggestions I can get. If it is the food, would do you guys recommend? Ive read on here that origin is a good food.. any other recommendations ?

Did you get a full vet exam or just a fecal? If your vet can't find anything wrong, I would assume it's the food. Innova is a good food, but in my past experiences, it's sometimes too rich. A good food that I've used is California Natural. It's pretty basic and I've rarely seen a bad reaction to it.
Purina Pro Plan Salmon and Rice!

I have fed it for years, all my dogs do very well on it!

How often do you feed him in a day and how much?

Hugz to your Boy!
I know every individual has their favorite food which works for them. I really like how Beckham is turning out on Nature's Variety Instinct, grain free. I hope you find the solution to the problem. Poor baby.
Thank you everyone for your advice. I currently feed him 4 cups a day, split into two times. once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I will look into these brands you guys have recommended. he tends to have a sensitive stomach, will changing his food make him sick also?

I looked up the ingredients and the first thing it says is chicken meal.. I thought that was something that anyone would want to stay away from, anything with meal at the end..? or is this not true? sorry for all the questions! I just want to get the best for my puppy :)
chicken meal is not bad that just means they took the water out of the chicken, its anything with byproducts that are bad like chicken byproduct.

are you feeding him his food and only his food or is there treats that you feed him as well, or people food? It can be fine at first because you are feeding him just his dog food in the morning and then it might get runny because of the treats you are feeding him. That is if you are, if not every dog is different on what they might do well on.

is there a food store with knowledgeable people there, with what you describe they might be able to recommend something. And a lot of the times if you dog doesn't do well on the food they will most of the time take the bag of food back and let you try a different one until you find the when they do well on.

Chicken meal is simply edible chicken with the water removed. "Meal" is fine as an ingredient; what you want to avoid is less-than-precisely-defined meals... "meat meal," "meat and bone meal," "poultry by-product meal"... that kind of thing.

Anytime you change a dog food do it slowly less chance of tummy upset. Add the new to the old food like 1/4 cup new the rest old, then 1/2 cup new, rest old, then a 1 cup new 1 cup of the old just do it over a few weeks then you will be feeding all new food before you know it. Good Luck
Hmmm I thought the general consensus w/our large breed dogs is to get them on an adult food before 7 months at least, if not sooner due to food quality & avoiding pano.

Been awhile since I had a puppy puppy...our girl was 5 months when we got her and we never gave her puppy food.

So I should start feeding him adult food now? Do I need to mix the puppy food with the adult food so it wont mess up his stomach? He threw up again this morning.. And I understand know, meal is good and anything with by products is bad. I buy his innova from petsmart so they dont really know too much about the food. And I barley ever give him treats because he has such a sensitive stomach and has loose stools all the time.. I do give him ice as treats instead.

I use Wellness simple solutions for Jackson - it's a sensitive stomach food and my Jackson has done very well on it. His stools are now normal, his coat amazing and NO shedding!

Bella has no stomach issues so she gets regular wellness!
What is his weight like? Sometimes stools will get loose if you're feeding too much.

I found that Silas was a bit pukey around that age, esp. in the morning. It was usually just bile, though - not food.

I'd feed him adult food now - it seems to be what all the knowledgeable Doberman folks say. Make a slow transition - mix 25% new, then 50% new, then 75% new, then 100% new over as long as you think he will need it. Some people drag this out for 1-2 weeks, my dogs don't have sensitive stomachs so I can just do it over a few days.

Holistically, ice is not a good treat. It is too cold for a sensitive tummy. Use his kibble for training treats. For treats just for the heck of it, don't. Firm then runny stools is often caused by overfeeding. Yes, he should be on adult food. Make sure the protein % is not very high.

okay, I just bought him a bag of nature variety prairie chicken and brown rice medley. Is this an okay food?? okay and no more rice got it. He weighs about 60-63 pounds right now. is 4 cups to much? how much should i be feeding him?
Natures Variety Prairie is a good food. Try starting him out on 1 1/2 cups in the morning and the same amount for his evening meal. Then you can adjust the amount up or down depending on how he does. Of course, you will have to do the slow transition over to the new food. Feed 1/4 new and 3/4 old food for a couple of days, then 1/2 new to 1/2 old a couple of days, then 3/4 new to 1/4 old for a couple of days, then all new food. Hope it works for you. Natures Variety is an excellent company, at least I think thats the name of the company...brain problem this second. I feed the Natures Variety Instinct as part of my food rotation. They have more varieties of the Prairie if you want to change proteins every so often. Hope it does the trick for your boy. Oh nearly forgot to tell you. If your boy is just throwing up bile in the mornings, his stomach is too empty. Try giving him a small handful of food when you put him to bed for a while. Parker used to upchuck bile in the morning and that stopped him.

Our vet(who sees a lot of dobermans) told me that a good quality food per cup should support 20lbs of dog. So 3 cups per day should maintain a 60 lb dog...depending on the food, that's for kibble.

Ok now I'd have to ask again what the ratio is for a puppy, if it's the same...altho I'd be careful not to overfeed.

I've seen a lot of mention also not to follow the measurements on bags but to watch how the dog does on the food.

One food our girl was on had to give SIX cups a day to maintain her then 65lbs, omg she was blowing away into dust on that Hills Z/D for allergies on her previous ration.

But then w/her a couple pounds either way makes a huge difference.
I have to be very selective in what I feed my Boston Terrier male. If the food does not agree with him, his bowel movement will start out formed and normal and then the end of it is loose like diarrhia. I am currently feeding him Taste of The Wild and the problem has stopped. The protein may be too high in the puppy food, switch him to regular. I have never fed puppy food to any of my puppies. They start off on regular. Questions that come to mind are; How many times a day do you feed him? Does he gulp his food down? Good luck!
Thank you everyone for your responses. I am currently transitioning him over as of yesterday. perhaps I will switch up amount of food once he is on the NV priarie. Im not sure if I should feed him less than 4c, he looks a little on the skinny side to me. but, I will give him less as recomended and see is that along with the new food/mix of old food will make him better. And for the throw up, I sometimes see undigested kibble.. sometimes I dont. He has stopped throwing up these past two mornings since I have added a little of the new food.

Can you post a picture of him?

I hope things improve with the change of food.
