Hi-I've been lurking here for a while and thought I should finally say hi. I have a senior boxer (9 1/2) and think I'll get a doberman next time I need a dog, so I've been reading everything I can find on them. I've really liked all the dobermans that I've met, and they sound like they might be a bit healthier than boxers. I've really enjoyed reading about your dobermans, especially the thread about "how to clean your bathroom." (hee hee)

HI Jen! Yeah this is a great site to get information on the breed but it is also a place to meet some awesome people! Welcome! I love Boxers lol Is it me or does it seem like Boxers are very upfront with other doggies? lol The boxers I have met lol either at the dog park or from a friend they all dont like to give other dogs their space when they first meet. lol I think they intimidate duchess lol. Big blocks of muscle lol :)
I don't know about the health of Boxers but for Dobermans...you can run into a few genetic diseases...that you can read about in the Doberman Health section...or on some websites. So if you plan on getting a Doberman from a breeder I'd suggest doing a lot of research on the Breeder you choose...find one that works breeds for health and temperment as well as their passion for Dobermans :) If you plan on having the ears cropped...a good breeder will have it done around 8 weeks before the puppy goes home. You still have to do the months of taping. Anyways...there are also a lot of great rescues that have some great dobes! and to me...giving a homeless dobie a home already makes me disregard the potential health problems. :) either way Dobermans are great beautiful dogs! and everyone who likes Boxers likes Dobermans :) There both great dogs!
Im glad you decided to say HI!!! :)

Hello and welcome to the forum! I am also from Michigan. What part are you from? I am in West Michigan, about 10 to 15 minutes outside of Grand Rapids! In my area we don't see very many dobermans.
Hi Jen
glad you joined in the party. Seems like a lot of folks here also have or have had boxers. I am owned by a 5 year old rescue doberboy named apollo. He was our first rescue, but won't be our last, that's for sure. he is just great.

there is a whole section on breeders (beware the evil byb's - backyard breeders ) they may be convenient and cheap, but in the long run you and the pup will likely pay for their genetic carelessness.

I am glad you are here and hope you enjoy and learn ffrom all the maniacs

Hello and welcome! Like many breeds, dobermans do have their list of potential problems, but go to a good breeder and you can save yourself a lot of heartache and money down the road.

Here is a link to the Doberman Pinscher Club of America on the genetic diseases found in dobermans, it pays to be informed :)
