Welcome! Im also from UK, living in leicestershire at mo but from north wales. Where abouts are you? Your dobes lovely, where did you have him from? My Zeus is now 19 weeks and from Nearctic dobermanns
Hello and welcome from North Wales. I wish you the best of luck with your new puppy, but I implore you to please do some research on same-sex aggression which is VERY common in this breed, particularly with males.
Hi zmchristopher, Im from Milton Keynes so not too far! Rupert is from Mianna Dobermans. I'd love to see more pics of Zeus! Tobey’s friend before Rupert was a Rottweiler called Zeus, love the name.
Hi Cassandra, thank you for your welcome and for your link, I'll definitely do some reading on there, however I did research it before getting Rupert too. Tobey has been neutered and is very, very submissive and has lived with lots of other dogs previously. Whilst Rupert is young, I have worked very hard at obedience training and socialization to minimize the chances of any aggression issues. Fingers crossed, we haven’t seen any aggressive issues towards Tobey yet, only small dominance signs so far which I think are to be expected as he establishes his part in our pack.
Whilst I appreciate there is still plenty of time for aggression issues to arise as he gets older, I have had lots of compliments about how well-natured he is at our dog training classes and hope that with lots of hard work he will stay that way
I am glad you are willing to research. I would also prepare for the potential possibility that you will have to crate and rotate the dogs should something happen in the future.
It can happen at any age, as young as 6-8 months or as old as 4 or 5. All it takes is one wrong look or a confrontation over a resource (a bone, food, a toy, or even you) and they will never safely be able to be around each other again. Always supervise them together and try your best to separate them when fed, given treats such as bones or chews, hopefully with diligent supervision, you can pick up on the signals and avoid a fight in the future. It is a good thing that you have him in obedience classes, keep up with them! Again, best of luck to you.
Thank you dax0402, Darkevs and ZeldaRules! Needless to say, I chose his name! I think my boyfriend, an ex soldier, would rather have had a name like ‘Rex’ or ‘Spike’ which would be far less embarrassing for him to call in the park!
Casandra, thank you again for your advice. I am a big believer in good leadership, discipline and exercise eliminating most problems, after all, Cesar Milan seems to do fine with his pack! I believe he started with a pack of rotties, I might have to try and give him a call if I run into trouble!
Amelia, I think Rupert is perfect and glad it's his name you sound like you are on top of things with the socialization and leadership so hopefully Rupert will love and accept your other male as his packmate as he matures. There are many members here with multiple male households so they can shed some light and offer tips. My 22 month old intact Doberman currently lives with my parent's male 8 year old border collie and they respect each other. He is also great with my boyfriend's male GSD, there are never any challenges or aggression. They actually cuddle together. Prime has also been used to many male dogs(intact and neutered) coming and going due to me fostering for rescues. I hope you have the same luck with Rupert! It is nice when everyone gets along
