Totally new here by Google.

Hello to One and All. Hope all is well with everyone and their Dobies. I recently picked up a one yr old male German Dobie. And just wondering whether or his ears can be cropped at this age.

Love my Dobie!

Welcome to DT! Hope you enjoy the forum :) Is your dobie a rescue?
Thank you. No, I got lucky. Picked him from a local Craigslist. Got him for FREE.
He's quite a good looking Dobie. Would be perfectly perfect if the ears were cropped... I'll learn to live with the way they are now...lol

Welcome from TX. Your boy is quite handsome with the natural ears
It's just somewhere in the back of my mind thinking male Dobies should have their ears cropped and females with natural ears.
With the ears standing up just look mean-er, prettier and better...IMO...lol

Thank you.

Welcome to DT! Looks like your new boy has good natural ear set from what I can see in your picture. My boys are natural eared and my female has cropped ears and regardless, people give them a healthy respect when we are out and about.

Enjoy him the way he is, he's all dobe and a handsome dog!

Thank you. Thank you all for the most warmth welcome ever. Love mine and also yours. They look soooooooooo awesome.
Just wish...his ears were cropped. Would have been even better. But... I have been BLESSED with him. Couldn't ask for more....Hehehe

One BIG surprise though. Yesterday was the second time bringing him to work. Both times he did not go potty. No matter what and/or how, on top of that...I fed him too much, he wouldn't do it.
What did do though...You're not gonna like this one...lol He gassed all day and in a small office....LMAO
As soon as I got him home. 10' away from the gate...BAM!!!

I consider getting a dog off of Craigslist a rescue(unless the person is clearly a BYB selling a litter) because there are some weirdos, animal abusers, and dog fighters that browse craigslist for free or cheap animals to abuse and mistreat, lucky you were able to get your FREE purebred doberman! Who knows what kind of hands he could have ended up in! I got my German Shepherd from an individual on craigslist so welcome to the club :)

Then...yeah. I guess I did rescue him. However the previous owner was a young female who teaches Tampa University.
That's right, I've been very lucky on that.

Talked to a Vet today and was told they can do the ear cropping but costly around if not, closed to 1 G. Might as well rescue another one with the ears already cropped...lol

Yes they can crop the ears, but they will not stand, they will just flop down. I hope the vet was not thinking a pit bull cut for your dobe... :(

I 'rescued' my dog in a similar manner as you did with yours. The man had NO idea what he was getting into, kept the dog outside 24/7 in the spring/summer/fall, and when winter came around he was locked up in a garage. He had some issues, mainly trust, but its been 13months and he has settled in well :)

Would love to see some pictures of your Dobe!

Welcome to DT! Please don't get too hung up on the ears. Remember in all of Europe, the Dobermans are natural eared. We here in the US tend to be used to the cropped ears. But once you get used to seeing them natural (like if you start looking at a lot of photos of those in Europe) you will find that they are very beautiful.

Besides natural ears are 100x better than a bad crop...and you really are never guaranteed a perfect crop. Please leave your dogs ears natural and enjoy him for who he is.

At this age most likely the ears would be cut and strung to stay upright, not a nice thing to go through at his age. His ears are very nice for a natural eared boy so be thankful for that blessing LOL. My rescue girl had ears like a flying nun!
