:wavey: I have decided that when it comes time to get a dog, I want to get a Doberman. I was recently talking to one of my friends and they were telling me about something called "mania" that these dogs get because of their brain growing larger than the skull's capacity. This puts pressure on the back of the eyes and causes the dog to go crazy. I have done some looking on the internet and can not find any studies that back up this claim. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks everyone. Im sure this site will be very helpfull in the near future!

Once youve had your puppy for a while you'll begin to feel you might be going crazy.

JK... This is an urban legend.

I apologize in advance for any aggressive responses you may have/might receive. LOL..... ;)

damn people...why with the flaming? I was just asking a simple question. I am not jumping into getting any dog just yet. If you noticed, I said "when it comes time for me to get a dog". I did see on the site that TracyJo, a moderator with over 2200 posts, was quoted saying

I was just wanting info on wether or not this is true. I dont think it is, but my friend said that her aunt had a dob. and it snapped on her one day and went crazy. Her husband had to wrestle it to put a muzzle on it and then the Vet. told them that was the reason.

Once again, I have found no proof that this is true and I think it was just an opinion of the Vet. Thank you to those of you that were polite in responding to my questioin. To the rest of you....well....I wont waste my time...

Thats a myth from people that do not know dobermans. Look around the forum to learn about this breed before jumping in and getting a doberman. Come on folks, its just another one that needs the Doberman 101 training.

sudden snaps in aggression are usually medically related and can occur in any breed. Sudden rage is a known issue in Springer spaniels, but has also occured in Dobermans. It has NOTHING to do with the brain growing too large for the skull - that is a myth.

The Doberman you refered to could have simply had an undiagnosed brain tumor............. no one will ever know.

Awww Dieselnuts please stay awhile and learn as much as possible. I am glad you have joined and I don't think anybody meant to be rude at you, I think that it has more to do with that myth is just so unbelievable. It's just that of all the things that people make up about the doberman this one really takes the cake! And the quote that TracyJo posted was meant as a joke.

So stick around and you will find that this breed will wiggle it's way into your heart and before ya know it you will be owning one!! :)

There is a search button at the top of the page. And another helpful area is located in the forum, you can look at all the older posts under specific headings. And last but not least, the archives have even older posts located at the bottom. And of course, don't be afraid to ask questions...really.

Diesel- I was in no way attempting to be rude or flaming you. The ignorance by the general publice blows my mind sometimes.
You have done the right thing by coming here to ask your questions and get to know more about the breed before going out and purchasing.
Enjoy the forum and hope you stick around.

I wonder how long this Myth has been around? Prob forever. I remember hearing it when I was young. There are a few Myths that have to do with the Doberman Breed.

You sometimes hear that all Blue dobes have Bad temperments.
And I have heard reds are bigger and dumb.
Also, that Am lines can not do any breed type work, that they are too delicate... I have heard a few Myths, Legends, and rumors. Anyone have any more?

There is Jean Clark's site about myths: http://www.thedoberman.com/myths.shtml

Welcome DieselNuts. I'm not sure your question was taken seriously at first. (Never hurts to have a thick skin.) There are all sorts of weird Doberman myths out there. The following is from: http://www.hope4dobe.org/myths.htm. (This site also includes as myths, "white" dobermans and "Warlocks")

What about "exploding brains" and do Dobermans eventually "turn" on their owners?

We can offer no explanation for the origins of these outrageous fallacies. Knowledgeable Doberman people merely shake their heads in wonderment at the total lunacy of these claims. Any dog of any breed (just like any person) may possibly develop brain tumors or other brain disorders, and brain/neurological problems could have temperament-related symptoms. Perhaps a situation like this gave rise to the "exploding brain" myth - we can only guess. Dobermans are no more predisposed to brain cancer or aneurisms than any other breed or mix-breed. And any dog, if abused, could certainly display aggression toward its abuser, even if that abuser is its owner. But common sense should lead people to dispel these blanket, ridiculous assertions.

Keep your questions coming. You may also want to explore http://www.dpca.org/DobeAbout.html.
