Goal Post Ear Taping

Well our new pup Jada has been with us about 5 weeks now and had her ears taped up for about 6 weeks since the surgery. She is doing well but I have had a time keeping her ears posted more than a couple days. In the past I only had one dog at a time so I only had the one dog that had its ear taped to try to remove it. Now with my red boy Titus licking Jada ears and the two of them rough housing all the time the head set gets some serious abuse.
I use foam backer rods backtaped with Zonas tape for the post and apply skin bond to get better adhesion. With the usual piece of tape between the two post to get the upright stance. Well between Titus licking, and Jada romping hard with him often rolling her over on her back and bending the post around at all angles I kept having a problem of the bottom of the post coming unglued and then the post leaning inward. This would put the ears at an angle that was not correct and bugged Jada also. So about every two days I was reposting to keep her angles correct. Well yesterday I decided to take a piece of the foam backer rod and put it between the post and tape it in place to hold the ears at the angle I want and to strengthen the whole set up and I am very pleased with it. I should have been doing that two dobes ago LOL.
Anyway I guess watching football with all those field goal this weekend got me thinking about a goal post for Jadas head. So far is working great and I am very pleased. maybe she can keep this on 4-5 days and she will be happier too with less ear jobs. I know some of you may already have done this trick but I just cant figure out what took me so long so I pass it on.
Heres a couple pic of the baby with her goal posts :)

TOUCHDOWN!!! Hopefully for the hometeam! :)
What a sweet pup! The taping looks great - and I know what a big commitment it is to keep them clean and upright!
She was sleeping when I picked her up to post and she just sat there very still while I worked on her, such a good girl...when shes tired LOL
I do decent work when there not thrashing around. I am hoping she will be ready to go the first of March having been up 12 weeks. :praying:
They stand good now so hopefully another 6 weeks we can call it done.
where is everyone finding the Zonas tape? I've looked in Walmart, Eckerd, CVS, etc... and can not find it. We are currenly battling the pocket problem with Kilo's ears. He also keeps flexing the muscles on the top of his head which causes the ears to lean inwards to each each other. Should I remove the bridge when posting as it seems to be serving no purpose with him moving the ears inwards the way he does.
I have found the Zonas tape online, I couldnt find it anywhere near me either.

For the bridge...If you have pockets, I think you need a bridge. You need to get some foam insulation (like you buy at lowes) wrap it with tape to make it firmer, and use that between the ears. (gonna take alot of tape to hold it in place) You need to keep the ears pointed slightly out, so that he cant tip them inward and cause pockets.

Im not a very good "explainer" maybe someone else will chime in who can explain it better :D
You can also use coffee straws (like the little stir straws you see at gas stations) to make the bridge. Just take a piece of tape, lay it flat, and put about 5 straws next to eachother, then tape over it, so it makes a flat firm piece.
You can try to talk to your Pharmicist, they usually can order everything. If not, just do a web search on "Johnson & Johnson ZONAS Porous Tape" and you can find plenty of places online. I think you can get 12 rolls for around 16 bucks. I found the 1 inch tape works great.

We also used tongue depressors for our cross member piece. I snagged a few from my vet with no problem...

Here's a pic of how we used the cross post.

The method described in my opening thread takes care of that very problem. You can cut the foam to any length needed and its strong and light weight. Working great on Jada.

I got my tape here
http://www.mfasco.com/product_info.php/p/j-j-zonas-athletic-adhesive-tape-1/products_id/1130?osCsid=b92a5b3bd2fde386f554074eb2bb9168

Cheaper than I could get it locally even with shipping. fast also, to my door in about 3-4 days tops.

Actually, many times the pockets are caused by bracing ears incorrectly, pulling it too tight. It would be a better idea to use some cotton next to the post right where the pocket is, to push the pocket out.

More than anything, I think you need to make sure you're doing everything correctly if you're having problems with pockets. Besides bracing too tight, pockets can be caused by not pulling the ear all the way up onto the post, or leaving the posts in after the post has popped out of the base of the ear. If the ears are posted correctly, then you never have a problem with pockets.
If they're not posted correctly, then no brace in the world is going to fix the problem.
The cotton tucked in to push the pocket out is exactly what my boxer friend did to fix the problem. The pocket disappeared in one 5 day posting! (and his ear totally flopped inward from the pocket before that!) This was two weeks ago, and she doesn't put the cotton in anymore now.
