I'm pooped!! I got the call at 4:30 that Zack (12 year old stepson) was injured at football practice. Left work to pick him up right away. When I got to the field he had tears streaming down his face. That scared me, let me tell you, Zack would rather do anything than cry in public. And he wasn't crying (like sobbing crying) just in enough pain that he was tearing up.

He complained of shoulder pain and was holding his arm, he had a hard time even getting in my van and everytime we hit a bump he would flinch. His hand was even really swollen. I took him straight to the ER, at which point we sat for 40 minutes  . Finally got into a room, sat for 25 minutes  , got to xrays, sat for 20 minutes  , and made it back to the room where after another 20 minute wait someone for the first time actually looked at his shoulder. At this point they had given him perscription motrin, and he was feeling alot more comfortable, but still in some pain. They think it is just a badly sprained shoulder, but are concerned that he might have a fracture to his growth plate in his shoulder. We have to take him to an orthopedic doc on Monday. He's wearing a sling till then.

After waiting another 30 minutes for a prescription and to be escorted out of the room...
We finally went home and took Zack out to Pizza Hut. (the get better prize for hurt kids!)

Wish him luck!

Thanks!! Boy was he hamming it up when we got home! (sign that he's feeling better!! little sneak!!) The doctor said no lifting or repetative motions and to really BABY his arm and leave in in the sling. So we're at Pizza Hut, and he asked how on earth he is supposed to do his dog chore (he has the golden job of picking up dog doody) and he's playing all concerned, oh but if I don't do it, it will just sit there I mean who else could do it! DORK, he doesn't care!!!! He passed the buck to his brother with a great big mischevious smirk!

LOL... Jordan has a cold today and wow you would think that she was at deaths door. I'm not feeling so hot myself but she, like Zack, is so hamming it up. All whiny and pathetic like, can't get off the couch to get the tissues for herself but the second I took the dogs outside she wanted to come out and jump on the trampoline! Kids! SHEESH :)

Awww... Poor Zack! Glad to hear he's feeling better. :)

My nine year old nephew, Tyler, just started football this week and I've been nervous waiting to hear that phone call that he hurt himself.

lexus also tell him to keep his shoulder as still as possible... i disocated my schoulder and my dumb butt didnt keep it still now i cant raise it past ninety degrees and it wont go backwards... so tell him to keep it still...

motrin is good surprised they didnt give him vicatin or hydrocodone. life is difficult when you cant move your arm...

he will be okay promise you that... he will be sore if it is only a sprain for about 3 months... then if it is a break... welll we wont go there because that isnt what it is right mom. :D he will be good after a bite.

hope he gets better soon.

First, aren't vicodin and hydrocodone the same thing?

Second (if there are any doctors out there, correct me if I'm wrong), but isn't vicodin contraindicated in children under 16?! Why are you, a medical student, surprised that they didn't script out a narcotic against dosing instructions?!

Sorry for the momentary hijacking of the thread, Lexus. Sounds like Zack's on the road to recovery... Hope things check out alright with the orthopedist!

no they arent the same thing. no it isnt...under specific circumstances they do give children vicadin or hydro codone.. hydrocodone has codone in it vicadin doesnt...second vicadin is given to people that are allergic to hydrocodone. i personally take hydrocodone at the moment... for you information elle....

they dont like to because it is a heavy narcotic but i used to take all the darn time when id fall off the horse and break something... or id twist my knee... and i am surprised as isaid they didnt give him something along these lines...

and what i would like you to do since you are one of the SMARTEST people in this room or in the world should i say... plz if you dont agree dont agree but dont attack me with it as if im dumb because IM NOT.... BELIEVE ME IM NOT! :3dbiggrin HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY ELLE...

anyway lexus away from elle who stole your thread and should have spoke to me else where about this considering this isnt a debateforum...

how is he doing...? i hope well. shoulders are delicate let me know how he is doing i am really anxious to know... hugs lexus and zack real hard... cept zack cause of his shoulder of course :D

Actually, your comment, if taken the wrong way could be potentially dangerous... I was simply trying to clear up some mis-information.

When doing ER observation for my EMT training, one of the things i learned from the physician was prescription-strength doses of NSAIDs (rx motrin, advil, etc) are effective in relieving the the pain of most sprains since they work to decrease swelling by reducing the level of hormones that cause inflammation. Thus, to me it sounds like Zack's doctor followed standard protocol and did excatly the right thing. Prescribing a narcotic analgesic would certainly alleviate pain, but seems quite unnecessary since it would fail to fix the root of the pain (not to mention the plethora of potentially harmful side-effects!).

As for your other assertations, please check out this information from the FDA:
http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dailys/02/May02/052102/02p-0233-cp00001-03-Tab-02-vol1.pdf

Information about:
VICODIN (Abbott)
(hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen tablets, USP)
Vicodin contains two active ingredients:
1. hydrocodone bitartrate
2. acetaminophen

So, according to the manufactuer and the FDA, vicodin is hydrocodone. Vicodin is simply the brand name and hydrocodone is the chemical name.

Each VICODIN tablet contains:
Hydrocodone Bitartrate 5 mg
Acetaminophen 500 mg

Also, from the FDA site above:

Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness in the pediatric population have not been established.
Thus, it is not labeled for pediatric use. Using it in children would therefore be AGAINST indicated use.

WHOA!!!! Thanks so much to all of you for your concern!!! He wasn't in enough pain to warrent more than prescription motrin after he had the first dose of and relaxed a little.....

He's got the all CLEAR!!! YEAH!!! Hubby took him this morning, I had a "motivational meeting" to attend....hummm yeah, that's another story.....

Anyway, xrays TOTALLY clear of any fractures to growth plate!! He's allowed to practice tonight, but NO impacts, he can only do the calastinics (sp?). He's pretty stiff, but that's because his dumb*ss mother. It was her weekend with them, and I specifically told her to be with him and make him take his arm out of the sling 3 to 4 times a day and stretch and rotate it for a few minutes each. We picked him up Sunday night, and she never had him do it. It was in a sling since Friday UNMOVED. The doctor said at the ER for him to stretch, and even if it was his growth plate that was fractured, he wasn't going to hurt it anymore and it was more likely a STRAINED shoulder. Now there's a dipwad that needs to pass a test before having anymore kids....

Anyway, like I said xrays clear, it was a confirmed strain. And I know a little boy that has a BUNCH of chores to make up to his brother!!

Thanks all!!! And sorry again to gunner's DAD!
