I have a question I was always told that when you get a cat or dog fixed at a young age as they grow they will gain more weight then they would if they were fixed at a leter date. Is this true?



The reason I am asking is because since my uncle is probably moving inwith me and my mother we will have to get her fixed because of loki and eski his 2 dogs. They are both males and are sort of aggressive when it comes to trinity anyways. Trinity is almost 2 years old and i want to keep her at a healthy weight. So if I get her fixed now would I have to ajusted her diet so control her weight?

Well, I am not sure it that is true for dogs and cats, My Raven is fixed and so are my 2 cats. Now, Raven is 74lbs and that is a pretty good weight for her.. Now the cats are 11 years old and fat and sassy but I like them that way.. Now I do know that when I got spay that I got fatter.. I don't know if it was the spaying that did that or middle age.. A dog will only gain weight if you feed it more than it needs. Yes their metabolism can slow down after they're fixed but you cut back the amount you feed them if this proves to be a problem. I had Ava spayed at 6 months old and I find it hard to keep weight on her because she's such an active dog. I've also known dogs that were very overweight and intact so it goes both ways.

Just keep maintaning her activity level and exercise and you won't have any problems. I've heard it too, but I don't put much stock in that. Scrappy was spayed at 6 months (is now 7 years)- not even a little overweight. Occasionally she would start to pudge out and I just up her exercise, like any of the other dogs I have.

It's a great idea to do it, and is the best thing you could do for Trinity. It will only serve to preserve her health down the road.

Personally I think it is all a myth that animals gain when they are fixed. Too much food and not enough exercise cause weight gain. Even if Trinity gains a few pounds by spaying her you will decrease her chance for certain cancers. I think that outweighs any cons to spaying.

My female cat gained a good solid 8 pounds after she was spayed. Gracie I don't really know how much she gained after being spayed. I didn't have her at that point..

One thing that jumped out at me was your uncles dogs are aggressive towards Trinity? That really worries me!

They aren't aggressive at trinity they are aggressive at each other but we are all thinking its because trinity is suppose to start her heat in about a month so she is probably putting out the smell. Loki use to not be this way with her and niether was eski. This is why we think its ebcause of her up coming heat.

They really shouldn't be noticing her yet b/c of a heat due in a month.
Typically they start paying attention at about the second week of heat.

I'd be really watchful over Trinity and the other two dogs for signs of problems- are they neutered?

Have you set her spay appointment yet? A female can be spayed when in heat, however it is more advisable to do it before or after to decrease the chance of complications. And if the two males are already presenting a problem being in the same house as her together, it could really be spelling trouble for when she IS in heat.

Loki was fixed at an early age, 7 or 8 months. He hasn't gained any weight that I can notice. He weighs in at about 85 to 90 lbs. He doesn't look pudgy at all and sometimes I think he looks a little thin.

Ask your uncle if he will fix his dogs: they will still try to well, you know what, with a spayed bitch, if not neutered. Also consider spaying your bitch if you do not plan to breed her (you shouldn't anyways unless she can get a ch. title which i highly doubt)

I think there was another update on the site because i already put this up here and now its not here. My uncles dogs are fixed they have been since they were pups. I haven't made to appointment yet because as of this point I'm not sure how much I will be getting paid this month. My uncles that I am cleaning his shop and warehouse has decided to pay me and my mother more but we aren't sure if we will be getting that amount this month or next. It all depends on how much I get on my checks because if I don't have enough to go to my original vet I will have to find a cheaper one. Just for an original visit to my vets office just to get updated shots it cost close to 200 dollars if not a little over. Even if my uncles dogs are still acting aggressive towards trinity after this there is nothing more I can do because he is moving in one way or another and me and my mother don't have a choice. I am getting her fixed greenkouki I never said Iwasn't going to get her fixed. Also I have already stated in another post that I am NOT breeding trinity.

Who's house is it? The other choice would be for the uncle to rehome his dogs.

Its mine and my mothers house but my grandparents pay the house bill. My uncle will never rehome his dogs. They aren't really trained either so befoer he left this evening i told him if he moves in here when he is not here his dogs will have to be somewhere else. Thats not a problem for him all of his friends are willing to watch his dogs.
