First time dremeling.

I got the new dremel charged up and decided while Jordan was quiet I'd give it a shot. I've already showed it to him and treated and he did fine and then turned it on and treated him and it was okay. I did just a second on the first nail and treated and he got ansy so I treated again and left it alone.

Then, he was cuddling on the couch with my friends son and I tried it again with some treats and cuddling and he laid still and calm while I went on to do each and every nail on all four feet. He did wonderfully.

I took him last week to have his nails done to see if the groomers could get them a little shorter and no suck luck. She barely took more off then I could have and even snipped a quick. I've been waiting for the dremel to see if I could train the quick back a little bit. How often should I do this for starters? I don't think I got very close to the quick with the dremel today but I can't see anything that looks like it would be the quick while dremeling at all so I'm not sure what to look for exactly. I read the web page describing it a trillion times and then again. His nails aren't terrible. I've seen much worse but I don't think he's ever had a trim until he came to my house and even then I waited almost a week for him to develop trust in me and start getting used to the trimming.

All in all though I'd say I'm trilled with his first experience. It was not at all the way I expected it to.

Glad is going well, I have the dremel, but prefer to use the nail clippers. So does *******.

You should dremel every 3 days if you want the quick to recede. Once you get the nails where you want them, then once a week should suffice.

It's hard to explain how to tell when you're getting close to the quick...the further away you are, the more dry and brittle the nail will be. As you get close to the quick, the nail material starts getting soft and spongy.
That's the site I was referring to. I read it at least 10 times before attempting it myself.

I've only cut a quick once in my life and it was about 12 years ago and I don't forget the feeling I got from it. I was so much worse off then the dog. So, I'm extra careful but heard that the dremel isn't as bad if you touch the quick, it is just a nick. I was surprised though at how little the groomer cut off of his nail and still hit quick though. It has been a week though and I've only cut his nails yesterday since then. I'll give it a shot every three weeks as close as I dare and hopefully they'll receed. Especially since he seems to do so well doing it.

Every three days :) (Im sure thats what you meant though)

I love my dremmel. I had to bust out the regular nail clippers for Coudai the other day, and ugh.......they make me so nervous. I WILL get this girl used to a dremmel though.

I know some people have NO problems at all with the regular clippers, but I can quick a dog in a heartbeat......I never have with the dremmel.
Love the dremel. Copper had his nails clipped until last year (he hated it). I thought I would try the dremel on him.. He loves it. Who says you can`t teach an old dog new tricks.:)
LOL, yup days. I'm more tired from training tonight then Jordan.

He does good with the trimmers but I'm still nervous. I've done it literally thousands of times (on other dogs) since then and never considered a dremel. I don't think I'll try it on Summer. Her hair is so long on the feet and she is not the most cooperative. At her age she doesn't have to be. But Jordan, sorry young pup, mommy has a new toy.
from what i understand, the quick will recede if you dremel every three days (like Murreydobe and BIB already said). don't worry! if I can do it, you certainly can. i remember reading the doberdawn website so many times before i actually did luna's nails. i was pretty nervous the first time i did them, but everything i read on the website came together at that time.
Dremels are nice because you can control how much nail is removed better. When I get close to the quick the nail starts to turn white in color. If I go any further I'll draw blood.
Maybe I'll be a little more brave once I get the hang of it. I just wanted to get him used to it this past time but he did so well and was so relaxed with my friends son that I used it to my advantage. I just did each nail once. Hopefully I'll be more comfortable doing more grinding next time I give it a go. My husband will be home with me too this weekend so he can give me support.
If youre nervous about the quick, just err on the side of caution and dont go as deep as you think you can. I do it about once a week, sometimes every other week, and really only aim to "take a little off" and keep the taps blunt and rounded. I like to leave Sherman a little bit of nail length for his hair-pin turns and weaves when he's hauling (tail) out in the desert. :)
Is that why he always slips down the hill in the backyard? Woops, my fault. LOL. I know I can't ever get them short but I dont like them to look like witches claws when he paws at stuff. Just a visual urk I guess.
