First feeding of raw

okay so I gave my 11 week old pup Odin half a raw chicken wing. He went at it pretty slowly and about 5 min later he puked some of it up, is that normal? He is fine now just sleeping. I've read and read about raw feeding and have not come across anything about if they puke it up the first time.

He's fine. I would suggest feeding larger pieces than wings... it is easier to choke on little things, and wings also have an inappropriately high percentage of bone. When my present dog came home at about the age Odin is now, I think that the first thing I handed her was a whole leg quarter.

Yes, it's pretty common. Also wings sometimes can be choking hazards for dogs. and there is a lot of bone content. I might go with leg quarters if you can to start with. Then slowly add in other meats and organs.

We call it the scarf and barf ... then scarf again :) No big deal they will do this from time to time and usually put it right back down. The important thing is just to watch him closely especially at the start.

We found the best thing to start was just buying whole chickens ($0.99/lb) and chopping them in half, twice, for 4 meals. For now just watch the wings since they are a choking hazard.

Today we use chicken once a day or once every two days, remove the wings and chop them up finely and feed with beef heart or gizzards to get some bone content into those meals.

I don't like either wings or legs due to the type of bone in them. I prefer backs and breasts with bone. Turkey necks are good for puppies but may be too small for adults. My kelpie puppy was eating chicken necks for about 2 weeks until she learned how to suck them on down without eating, then barf them back up - she was under 3 mths at the time. No more necks - we ground the rest up and started her on backs. I cut excess fat off the back.

Also the chicken wing is low in meat and high in fat with the skin and bone.

okay thanks for the info, there is just so much information out there about RAW feeding its so hard to determine which advice to follow. There is a butcher shop near me that that grinds up the meat, bone and organ together and sells it that way. Is that too much to feed him all three at once right away or should I stick with what you guys suggested.
When I started Coco on raw she ate ground chicken with the bone ground in, an offal cube (ground organs) and a tripe cube (cows stomach). The tripe was suggested by the owner of the raw food store as she advised it aided in digestion and assisted the dog in starting off raw. I found at the beginning feeding raw was a little trial and error too!! It also depends what your dog likes and how things agree with him. Good luck!!

If the price is right and the ratios are right, then it sounds like a great thing to do:)

Make sure you read the thread that Doberkim started on Raw Feeding FAQ.
