EEWWWWW!!!!!! Duchess had two ticks on her today after the dog park!!! I have never seen one before...and so now I am on a cleaning frenzy!!!!! IM TRAUMATIZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as for the time being I am not looking forward to a camping trip with Duch. EEEEEWWWW!!!!!
Mosquitos...okay...spiders...alright...Fleas..that would suck...but TICKS are sick!!!!!!!!
off to clean and wash everything!!!! especially my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anyone got any stories...maybe try convincing me that being in the outdoors and enjoying nature is not SO bad. :help_up_2

Well...I rinsed Duchess off in the shower since she went into the pond today...then...me and my mom were talking about ticks...and then while I was checking her over she had this flake on her back "Elbow" and I just gently brushed it off...and it went on my hand!!!!! I saw legs and shook my hand and freaked out...My mom said what! and I was like A TICK I think!!! and she said OOO WE BETTER FIND IT!!! so then a little later I found it crawling up on the outside of my pants! I showed it to my mom and said I found it...she said it was a tick...and YUCK! I always thought they were white!!! and they are actually REALLY small and flat!!! they were a brownish/blackish color...they blended in perfectly with Duchess's fur where it is black with tan mixed hairs like on her butt and legs. I DEFINATELY took a shower RIGHT after and threw my clothes outside.
After we saw that she DID have one tick...I left it to my mom to really lift up fur and look for them. she is hates them...but she is alot more use to them then I am! lol. My mom would feel something small..lift around the fur...and then she found it. We got the tweezers...and she held the tick up for a little bit until they let go...None of them were really attached much...
we found another one on her butt/thigh...and it was just trying to crawl back into the fur...and then the first one that i brushed off.
We don't have Duchess on any flea and tick stuff..my mom hates all the frontline and stuff. Were going to order this other stuff that I guess you put in their water...like I said they didnt seem to inbeaded into her yet.
She went to the same dog park last year...and we never found a tick...maybe since it is spring...and it rained last night...AND she went into the pond...
YUCK! Im still being a clean/germ freak right now lol
my mom said that camping up north she didnt get any ticks...were in Illinois...and so MAYBE if I decide to go camping it will definately be more up north

Frontline can be tricky to apply on a short-haired dog like a Doberman, but I use it anyway. My Vet says you can get away with using it every month and a half, instead of once a month. It does work. I'm the one who comes home from the mountains with ticks, they won't touch the dogs.

The ticks around here are pretty good sized (about the sized of this "O"), so they're easy to find. They don't burrow into skin for at least a few hours, so they can be spotted and dealt with before they become a real problem.

I've seen them in summer and winter. I came home from a snow-hike with one a few years ago, so these pests know no off-season. By the time I spotted that one, it was too late. He had burrowed his head into the back of my arm, and I wasn't patient enough to give the usual remedies time enough to work. I tried to pull it out, but his head was stuck in my arm. The doctor had to take a divot out of my arm to get that out.

Knowing they're out there, knowing what to look for, and remembering to check, both yourself and the Doberman, will prevent most problems.

Had one on our cat once but never had one on the dogs YET,we used a flea killer on the cat one and just let it die and fall off but you can get a tool to remove them also which get's under their head.gives me skin crawls just thinking about them.

I always use frontline for my guys. It doesn't just help prevent the fleas, but does help with the ticks, since I live out in wooded areas by a national park. I found a dog some years back in the woods that was wondering lost. She was covered in ticks completely. Full ticks, so they have been there awhile. I applied frontline to her and they were gone within the hour. They started falling off. (had her outside) It was pretty disgusting. I don't like ticks and love to go camping. Haven't had much issues yet anyways with the dogs. I just check myself when I come inside from yard work.

We have a spray called "Home Defense" that we spray around the fence, the house, and sometimes inside the house. When you spray you can't let animals near it for an hour or two. It prevents ticks, fleas, spiders, ants, and a few other things from coming into your area. Last year it worked great. We will be spraying today as well.

Also we took Gracie camping last year. I have never once found a flea on her or a tick. I am always checking her and the cats. I know Duchess must have got it from the dog park. But I just wanted to share this information with all of you.
