Hello, I'm looking for good vet to crop my puppies ears, they're 10 Weeks old. I've seen Dr Jezbera in Riverside was recommended but he do not take appointments for ears crop during Covid 19. Does anyone know a good vet in Los Angeles area who is still practicing ears crop during the pandemic ? With a reasonable price as I have 2 puppies..

From what I have heard Dr. Jezbera is one of the best in your area. Regarding vet doing non life saving procedures, I am having the same problem in Utah just finding someone to do a simple spay or neuter. I feel for you. I would not try to go a vet without experience in cropping. Actually Doberman breeders that I have ever known will make sure puppies are cropped before leaving.

I've heard Dr Zarelli mentioned here on dt in Irvine. No personal experience.
I thought that Dr Zarelli had retired some while back. There is a vet in Pasadena, California who was trained by a vet who was kind of the go to cropper for many years in the LA area. I've seen one of her crops owned by people who are up in the Portland, Oregon area and who were referred to me to help them learn how to post ears. Now all I need to do is remember her name--which I'll try to do by looking for information I posted when I first saw the pup and was working on his ears.

But anyone who can help us find the name I'd love it. Didn't we have a thread with the names of croppers on it? (it was outdated but it had the names of some vets who are still cropping on it and I'm pretty sure I added the Pasadena vet's name to it.)

I'll go looking now...

Hi Milez,

I went hunting for the name of the vet in Pasadena and finally got a hit on my third try working with the search screens

The vet is in Pasadena works or at least worked three years ago at Rose City Vet in Pasadena. The vet's name is Dr Bliefer and she was trained by Dr LaBounty who retired several years ago and he was for many years one of the go to vets in southern California to do GOOD show crops.

I am familiar with Dr LaBounty's crops--they were very nice--among some of the best in California. Before he retired he put up posts in all of the Dobe forum and list offering to train any vet who wanted to learn how to crop Dobermans--explained in those posts that he was going to retire in a couple of years and there were not a lot of vets who really did good show crops on Dobermans.

I don't have a phone number for Rose City Vet/Clinic but I looked it up via Google back when I was first contacted by a puppy owner whose crop was done by Dr Bliefer. So I have actually seen at least one of her crops and it was very good--so I don't hesitate to recommend her.

Good luck and you need to get going on it--don't know if she is cropping during the COVID-19 but I work for a vet clinic in Portland, OR and we recently opened up for more than just emergencies and are now starting to do annual exams and non-emergency surgeries like spays and neuter. (No crops--none of our vet even know how to crop and the ones who know anything about posting learned it from me and my Dobe puppies and our bookkeeper and her Boxers.

The bottom line is that most vets who crop won't crop puppies later than 12 weeks. Good luck on this--there just aren't many vets who do good crops on Dobes--and some of the ones who have done hundreds of crops and tell you they have been cropping for years have done very few Dobes and mostly have experience with the kind of crops done on pit bulls.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and the Pasadena Vet.

This is an old sticky from 2009 for names of cropping vets. But that's 10 years ago now--just glancing at it, at least some of the names I recognize aren't cropping anymore.

https://www.dobermantalk.com/ear-cropping-posting/30612-recommended-vets-who-crop-ears.html

Bug, or someone else who has the time and knows (more than I do, anyway--not my area of expertise)--would any of you mind going through and seeing if any of the vets listed still crop. It seems kinda pointless to sticky a thread like this if none of it is up to date.

If the recommended vets aren't cropping right now, you are better off leaving the ears natural. There's nothing worse than a bad crop job.

Did you buy two puppies?

"Did you buy two puppies?"

Yeah MC... I was wondering the same thing.
(littermates or not), please return so we can have a discussion specifically addressing that issue.

Yes, it can be an issue.

Best to you and your pups!

I thought it was Labounty that stopped cropping. Here's the contact for Zarelli you can try https://www.irvinepetcomplex.com/
I just checked the vets listed as practicing at the Irvine location Dr Zarelli isn't listed. I also checked services offered and it looks to be primarily a general practice facility these days.

I went through the list you posted the link to and that's one of the ones that was floating around (and it's one that said, the post might have been from you) that Zarelli had recently moved to the Irvine location and was only doing crops on Thursday. I'm almost certain that he retired and that's why he moved from the clinic he'd been at for years--trying to phase out his practice as a specialty cropper one step at a time.

I know Dr LaBounty retired--almost 5 years ago now.

There is another list around somewhere (might be the one on DPCA)--which lists a vet in BC (Newton Animal Hospital, Ric Douglas DVM) he did wonderful crops and I put his name in that list and for several years he was kind of the go to good cropper in the Northwest. But Canada now doesn't allow cropping in any of the provinces as far as I know. The Canadian breeders either bring litters to the US for cropping or I've heard that some of the breeders have American breeders whelp litters for them in the US so there won't be problems getting the puppies into the US to crop.

Of course it's all kind of a problem now since the COVID-19 restrictions.

Beyond that I know not much.

Just quickly for Mel (if I don't get back to doing as she requested) from that list of cropping vets. I know that Dr Sam Grant is deceased--too bad--he did lovely crops. Dr Patty Edwards is also deceased. Dr La Bounty is retired and he may also be deceased.

I'll see if I can verify others.

Bug It looks like Zarelli owned the practice but has since sold it- possibly retired? It might still be worth a call.

Thankfully there are some new vets who do really nice ears (although I don't know about on the left side of the country) that aren't on these lists or mentioned on DT on old threads. I can think of a handful out this way.

There never were a lot of really good croppers on the west coast. Or anywhere for that matter. At least not many that did good Dobe crops.

For years there was one in GigHarbor Washington--Dr Bloomquist who had gone to Germany and paid one of the best of the best German croppers to teach him (before Dobes were no crop in Germany)--he did virtually all of the Dobe crops and Boxer crops (show crops that is before he retired and following him was Chuck Kruger DVM who worked for Bloomquist for years--Bloomquist refused to teach him anything but Chuck always said you can't stand in on cropping litters of Dobes and Boxers for 8 years and learn nothing. Then Ric Douglas in BC Canada--he had a cropped breed and learned Dobes on the pet puppies of some very good breeders.

Oregon had a non vet cropper who did nice crops. And a vet cropper who did not so good crops. There is still someone who crops between here and Salem (never can remember the name) but crops are in the barely OK range--pet crops as far as I'm concerned.

California had La Bounty, Buchko--the people who liked his crops really liked them but I though La Bounty's were better. And Zarelli and Jezbera in southern California. There was a vet in or around San Jose who did some cropping (his wife bred Dobes)--some were OK and some not so good. And there was one in Sacramento--long since retired.

Utah Dr Pew--good show crops. Two in Texas. One in New Jersey. Two? in Florida. Some others scattered around but I know the names of some of them but not sure where some are. I think east coast has always had more good croppers than the west coast.

If I was looking for a vet who did good show crops and I couldn't find one who actually was known for Dobe crops I'd look for a vet who did good show crops on Danes. They have the most similar crops to Dobes.

I'll see if I can put together a list and give it to one of the monitors and see if we can develop a list that is at least more or less current.

Thank you, DB. We're making a list--we'll check it twice and collate it with yours.

If you can, can you come up with where their practice is--either by city, or nearest big city, or area in a particular state (northern Calif, southeast TX--that kind of thing)

Here is Prince that had Bliefer of Rose City crop his ears 5 years ago. Her cut was outstanding ... Disregard the one ear with a slight tilt at the top as this had nothing to do with her cut but falling in pool when ears were posted and getting wet then one ear infected

I had Thor's ears done a little over a year ago at Pico Rivera Animal Hospital. I think they came out nice. I know he does a lot of dobie's in the area. There were probably 3 or 4 whenever we went back for a check up.

What are the names of the vets? These are both decent crop jobs.
