Advice is greatly appreciated...

Everything was going great, he had the surgery with no problems and came home perfectly fine (his usual running off with any clothes I'd left on the floor self). His ears were taped to a cup, and the vet gave me this powder (Neo-Perdef) to put on them twice a day. She said just to peel back the wrap sprinkle it in and rub it gently. Well...the second I peeled back the wrap, his left ear fell out completely, and there was no way he was letting me put it back in. So I called her to let her know and she said to bring him in the next day. When I brought him in, she decided to just take the cup off...and she told me to leave it off for a week and then to come in and get the ears taped...does that seem right to you? I thought the cup was supposed to stay on for a full week, not just one day.

I took him in this morning to have her take a look at the ears, and she said she was going to go ahead and tape them. They took him in the back and when he came out, he had a thin piece of foam stuck in each ear, and nothing holding them straight up (they were sticking out almost like handle bars instead of straight up). She said to leave them taped until Sunday and then to take the tape off and they should be standing. (after only a few days of taping and one day on the cup??) When I got home and could take a better look at them, i noticed it looks like the stitches weren't taken out either (which I thought were supposed to be removed before taping). So I frantically tried to call before they closed, but I was their last appt, and by the time I got home they were closed.

I have a really bad feeling about all this, but unfortunately, I wont be able to get to another vet until Thursday morning. I've been calling around, but most vets are closed for the day, and the couple that were still open have no dr.'s experienced with ear cropping. I taped the ears myself so that they're straight up instead of out to the side, but he is shaking his head A LOT and I can't get him to stop. I even tried letting him chew on my socks which he loves so much...but nothing seems to distract him long enough. Right now he's sleeping (thank God). What can I do to get him to stop shaking his head (if that's possible)? And what do you all think about the vet? Does she just have a different way of doing it...or should I be worried. Also, how much bleeding is too much and how much is normal?

(sigh) thanks. :sadcry:

Only one of them is bleeding, the same ear that fell out. It seems to have stopped slightly since he fell asleep...but I think the continued shaking wont let it heal completely. I'm not sure what normal bleeding is with ear cropping, so I can't say for sure if it's anything I should worry about. But I am going to take him to a different vet on Thursday morning either way cause I just have a bad feeling about this one. thanks!

Thanks for the advice! I thought they weren't supposed to be taped if the stitches are still in, but I assumed she knew what she was doing. I can't see the part where the ears are taped (obviously), but I can see that the stitches are still in the base of the ear...so maybe she removed the stitches on the taped portion of the ear, possibly?...but either way, like you said...she could've just redone the cup. It's definitely not just dried blood anymore (that's all it was when she removed the cup) :-/ I think I'll take your advice and search for a breeder who has experience with cropping, but I think he might have to go to the vet for the bleeding if it's not better by tomorrow morning.

Yeah...He's nowhere near being done with the entire process, and I now understand exactly why it would be best for the breeder (or someone with experience) to take care of the cropping. But I guess maybe a good reason why a breeder might not crop is if you specifically want natural ears. It's just easier b/c like you said MaryAndDobes, it's hard not knowing exactly if you're doing the right thing, or if it's going the way it's supposed to be. I feel like I've been calling the vet every two minutes since he came home after the surgery. Not to start the entire breeder debate over again though...hopefully. But...I can't really go back and change anything, and I honestly didn't know. I guess it's all a good learning experience.
