I just would not use one at all, that is just my opinion on e-collars.
I think e-collars have a place in training IF they are used properly and by a person who is experienced and knows what they're doing. OTOH, if the pup is raised and trained properly from day one, I don't think there is as great of chance in needing an e-collar for remote training in the future - compared to a dog who hasn't had a proper upbringing. Does that make sense?
i think you have a 3 month old male, and he has no business being near an e-collar for a very very very long time, so its a moot point!
My lil man isnt the only dog I have And was recently offered a great deal on a ecollar so was wondering if should get one at all. I was concidering one for My GSD and wanted informed opitions :) Thank you to all
I think that they are are great training tool if they are in the right hands. They train alot of hunting dogs with them successfully. But I dont think I would ever use one as a primary training tool, just because I feel like I would do alot more damage than I would good. Even with a low stimulation level I don't think I would try it, unless I were working with someone who had been training with them successfully for a long time. Dobes and GSD's are so smart anyway, I think you could probably teach them just about anything with a Kong, a Fursaver, and a leash. Good Luck.
e-collar and question

No experience with a e-collar. I suspect there can be more abuse with them than not.

BlackinBlack or anyone what is a fursaver? I never heard of that.

Arent E-collars the funnels you put on your dog to keep them from licking their stitches...

Im assuming they are talking about the Electric shock collars...
LD, I think the vinyl "satellite dishes" that funnel the dog's entire head are also called Elizabethan collars. Above, they're talking about (E)lectronic collars.

A fursaver is kind of like a "choke" collar, but with larger links. Alot of people with long haired breeds choose them over the choke collar because the fur doesent get caught in it as easily when tightened. I use it as Rommel's primary collar in obedience and tracking because that is what he will wear in a trial.

Here is a picture of Rommel wearing one.

I started using an E-Collar on my 9-month old boy and it's great. You might want to visit Leerburg.com for more information. I bought the Electronic Collar Training for Pet Owners DVD, as well as Basic Dog Obedience, Dealing with Dominant & Aggressive Dogs, and Building Drive & Focus.

Used PROPERLY, an e-collar is more humane than a tug of the leash, in my opinion. It's great for off-lead training, but you MUST have SOLID on-leash fundamentals before starting an e-collar training program. You will still need other training tools such as a 20' long line and a 35' tracking line for some of the training exercises.

How come dogs in trial wear fursavers? Is there any reason behind that?
My guess is that people were taking flat collars and putting things in them to make them "feel" to the dog like it had an e-collar on. The dog can wear the fursaver for all three phases, and you can easily see that it hasnt been altered.
We have one. It was like a miracle in a box. We haven't had to use the shock very much. Ours has a beep. You can push the beep on the remote and it will stop Gracie dead in her tracks. When we first got it, we read the directions it said to put it on them and use the beep to make sure it works. It worked. She knows when she has that on that she is going some place where there are a lot of people or distractions. When we took her camping she had it on most of the time.

I really believe it was a good investment. We hardly have to use it any more. This year she has had it on maybe 5 times. For the most part we have complete control over her. Which is what we need and wanted. This just helped us get through some of the things that were hard for us to get through with her. Does that make sense?

We decided to buy it because in the backyard when you walk off the deck into the grass she would circle you and grab your leg or ankle. I had bruises and holes all over my leg. So we got it so I can walk out into my back yard. Now she almost never does it. She did it again a few weeks ago and she hardly even got me. I just gave her a quick NO and ouch and it hasn't happened since. We would try to use command words before the beep then after. It worked for us. It is not for everyone though. Before we used it besides the beep we got some training for it. So we knew how to use it.

I hope that helped. If you have any more questions please feel free to pm me.
