Does anyone know why there is no pork dog food? It dawned on me that we have, chicken, lamb, fish, red meats, etc, but no pork.
I was wondering because if we have any leftover pork ,I have never given it to the fur kids as I`m not really sure. I figure if dog food is not made wih it maybe they should not have it.

All I can tell you is any type of pork(pig ears, fresh etc.) will tear Gaston's tummy up! Not to be crude but can you say "Hershey Squirts". I've never given any to Roxy and if she's anything like her "Big Brother", I really don't want to find out!!!!

AHP, Eagle Pack and others do use pork in their foods. It's an excellent protein source for your dog (Oscar likes pork chops, pork liver, pork roast, etc.). Personally, I think the answer to your question is that the beef industry is more powerful than the pork industry and it influences our opinions about pork, both in human foods and pet foods. Not a super long time ago people were scared of getting trichinosis (worms) from pork that wasn't cooked properly, so that's a holdover thought from generations past. And poultry (chicken, turkey) is cheap so of course it's commonly used in dog food. Fish, too. But the bottom line is if you have some left over pork, your pooches will probably like it and it's as good for them as any other meat protein. Personally, I cook it though and don't go from feeding totally lean meat one day to a bowl of fatty ham the next or you'll likely end up w/diarrhea.

I never thought about pork ears or the beef industry being more powerful and that other companies do use it inpet food. I was just curious because when we do have leftovers its nice to know I can pass it on to the fur kids. Good point too not to giive to much (particularly ham). I certainly don`t want any runs or upset stomachs around here.
Thanks everyone--I knew someone would know.

Does anyone know if you have to cook it. I was just going to ask this question today cause I bought about seven lbs of cubed pork cutlets yesterday. Quick sale of a little less than 1.50 lb. I thought it was cubed beef. That's twice I've made this mistake. It is good though, ate some with eggs this morning. Just wondered if I could feed raw as I heard the tricinosis(I know this is not the right spelling, but can't find it) is not to be worried about anymore.

I think you do still have to worry about trichinosis. I just had Microbiology (went back to school to be a vet tech) and there was a section on it. I wouldn't take a chance, myself.

I use ivomec for heartwormer, etc, do you know if it will take care of it, seems to take care of everything else.
