If you have an unpredictable and aggressive dog, it is unlikely that you can train it out of the dog. Their wiring is inherently defective. Fortunately, most Dobermans are fairly stable in the hands of an owner that is smart enough to manage the task.

As for age, I totally agree with Bug. We use 10 years as the benchmark (+/- 2 years). If you are lucky they will live longer. If you are not lucky, they may not make it. Of course, we have had some that did not make it, but we have had quite a few that lived to 12+. Our oldest was a month short of 16.
 
Well, you know what? My dogs can read people. We have had many dogs that are/were 100% trustworthy around normal/non-threatening children and adults, but could fire up in an instant should there be an actual threat presented. I like these kind of dogs and not one that is on edge all of the time. We want our dogs to be stable and even "friendly" in public and know the difference between a threatening and a non-threatening situation.
