My doberman uses his feet to wrap his arm around your leg to stop you from walking, or he'll tap his paw on you to get your attention. I've never had a dog use his feet so much for things! Is this a doberman thing or just a silly dog thing?

Haha! Mine does the exact same thing! If I have food he'll "sneak" (which, is so funny because their so big) over and put his arms around me to try to butter me up then slowly moves his head to the food! haha. Dobes are such characters
Kaiser uses his front legs a lot when he wants my attention.
If he wants something he would come and sit next to me and stare at me (usually this is when his feeding time comes)... and if i continue to ignore him, he would put one of his paws on my arm and pull my arm down till i give him what he wants..(his food)
He does this in the morning also when he comes to wake me up...If i pretend to be sleeping and ignore him,he first puts one of his paws on me and if i continue to ignore him put the second paw. Then i have to get up because he is half way on to the bed and he is NOT allowed on the bed.
Lollipop uses her front feet a lot also. To grab you when playing, or she rolls on her back and uses the front feet to hold a toy or bully stick. Very clever dogs.
They also play that way - stand head to head and each one uses their right leg to grab the other dog's right leg - like linking arms. Enid uses her feet like a monkey. I taught her target too early so she touches anything she likes, including people. She is now over her fear of strangers and goes up to them, sits and then taps them for a pat - ever so gently though. Yoda is always using his front feet.
I think it is a Dobie thing. All four of my Dobermans have been foot users. Sweep loves to bat the Boston Terriers with her front feet. She also taps me at night when she wants under the covers in bed. ;o)
I've always thought of it as a Dobie thing; our last one did it sometimes and Sky is always using her front paws to make some point or another. Sometimes if i'm on the bed with the laptop she'll come up, and tap my number keypad repeatedly until I pay attention to her. She especially likes to do it while i'm messaging people. I just tell everyone that the 04+*9 was Sky saying 'Hi', lol
I was just thinking about this the other day. Titan karate chops the backs of my legs when I am walking. I'm 5' 3'' so he always gets me in the back of the knees. Then he swats his toys around and plays soccer in the kitchen. Sometimes he even throws his front paws forward like a parade pony when he walks. He also does the classic slap to my arm to get me to pay attention to him. LoL I have never had another dog be so much about the paws before. Its certainly a dobe thing.
My Dobes definitely use their paws to express themselves way more than any of my other dogs ever did/do. I stop them from using their paws too much around me though -- both of them went through a really pushy stage where they'd grab people with their paws and hold them there so we had no choice (they thought) but to pet them. Ripley's still learning not to control me with his paws, but he's pretty good -- he just forgets sometimes. Keira never uses her paws on people anymore.
Its definitely a dober thing. I have never seen another dog use their front quarters like a doberman does. Maddie uses her paws quite extensively. She uses them a lot when playing tug especially she's losing she will wrap one if not both around my arm and try to force it to ground to break my hold on the rope. During wrestling she will swipe or try to throw a hook which is quite powerful. I've gone to the eye doctor several time to have my glasses tweeked because she has knocked them out of whack. Then there are times she will sit next to me and put her arm around me like she was my best buddy.
Wolfgang always taps the sofa every night when he wants my husband to move his feet so he can jump up on his side where he lays every night. He likes to tap my foot when I'm eating, I guess to remind me he is there in case I want to drop something. Gretchen, she uses her front legs like a wrestler, wrapping her front legs around another dogs neck or pawing at them to get them to play.
Baron uses his paws more than any of my other Dobes. He always likes to have a paw touching when he is near. Either sitting or laying down, always touching. He also does this thing which I call the "parrot thing". When he gives his paw while sitting, he likes to give the other paw too and then sits like he is perched on a branch. It is the funniest thing. None of the others ever did this.
Yes... they are so expressive, and use whatever means they have, to let you know what they are thinking. Plus, they also use them to play, like Boxers... they tap you, pet you, etc. They are so cool!
Yes, all my Dobes have to a degree but Tara to a far greater degree!
