Does anyone know...

What is an average or good price for a doberman in Ohio?? I am looking for a pet only but would like to get one where the breeder does all the right health tests to ensure I would be getting a healthy dobe. Doesn't have to have champion bloodlines. I would like to pay for one in the $1000-1500 area, is that possible? Also, I would love to get a red female. Does it cost more to get a red doberman rather than the black and tan??
Does anyone know of any good breeders in Ohio?? I am not looking for a puppy now, it will be quite awhile before I start looking for one but I would like to start searching for a breeder so I can get to know and trust them and feel comfortable with them for when the time comes for me to get a puppy.
Thank you to anyone who can help!!

That's how I found Mensa's Breeder. I called the one closest to my house. She wasn't expecting a litter, but she knew who was. She gave me contact information and put the good word in for me.

As far as I know, Reds don't cost any more than Blacks. Mensa's Mother had both Reds and Blacks in her litter.

You should be able to find a good Dobie in your price range. In my case, the longer it took to find the right breeder, the bigger my Puppy budget became.

Good Luck!

Anyone who prices puppies by color is a breeder to be avoided. They should be graded and priced by quality. More than likely you'll wind up paying around $1500 for a well bred pet quality puppy out of champion, health tested parents.

Here's a list of DPCA chapter clubs in that state..these clubs usually have a breeder referral service:

There are also a lot of dobe rescues in ohio if you are at all interested and they come into my pound(lorain county) all the time.
I live in Michigan and when I was researching breeders, I found them anywhere between $1000-$2500, depending on pet- vs show-quality. We are getting our red male pup for $1200, which is about average in our area for a pet quality pup.
I'm in Ohio (Cincinnati) and would be glad to answer questions on breeders if I can - I know most of the folks who show in Ohio.

Blackdog would be the one to know the Ohio breeders - I would contact her. I do Pennsylvania, and she does Ohio - LOL - we are apparently a team and now we just have to meet someday :)
Thanks everyone for your help!!
I pm'd you Blackdog.
True! Too bad we weren't showing at the same time.

Is Louise coming to the shows in Columbus in April? (I know, I know, nobody knows what Gwen is going that far in advance)

I live in NJ, and went to the local AKC website and Dobe site. I got my dog from a nationally known breeder, whos dogs have won at the highest level. the highest.

$2000 for a conformance quality pet only. She told me he could be a champion often.

She also had a pup from the same litter that she gave away.

What it comes down to is, it's not about the price per se, but about how they maintain the breeding stock. She told me several times she wasn't in it for the money, it was more for the breed and the dogs.

A good breeder will also refer you to another breeder if she doesn't have a pup available. She told me when we first started the process, if I found another breeder to call her anyway and she'd advise on the breeding pair.

I'm not sure where she is every weekend this coming month. We only need 4 more singles and I'd really like to have a chance to see her finish so I'm keeping her fairly local.

When are the columbus shows? My Hubby is originally from Ohio and went to college in Columbus - I've never been to Columbus. Are you going?

I know some handlers really keep their furture destinations very close to their vest - hard for us to understand for sure, but I guess she has her reasons. It is sometimes a pain due to trying to plan on which shows I can go to. I'm also trying to get Velma out to finish her Rally Novice title, but I can't enter her till I know where Louise is going to be and by the time I know where Louise is going to be, rally is sometimes full. Gwen very nicely did give me some dates so that I could enter Velma in shows this coming month, but if I shared them she might have to kill me :)

Huh?

Dogs only become a champion once unless they are finishing championships in other countries too.

Even then, I suppose they're either a champion or they're not.
The shows are at the state fairgrounds in columbus Dobes show Sat. And Sunday. All Specialtites on Saturday. Its the end of April I think 22nd that weekend.

sounds like there will be majors then. Since Louise has her majors, I won't send her that far away to a show that will probably draw them. Just trying to find the time to get to local shows is hard enough when I have to juggle dog shows with kids stuff!

LOL, yeah, she might!

I think it's silly to be *that* secretive. I use Andy Linton (just as big a "gun" as Gwen), and he sends out his schedule (usually for at least 2 months) to all of his clients and interested parties on a regular basis. So does Michelle Santana-hell, I don't even use Michelle and I get a copy of her schedule when she sends it out. You shouldn't have to beg for information or let the rest of your life be held hostage to a handler over something like this.
MaryandDobes, I understand the show requirements. Unfortunately there was ambiguity in my statement, hows this for the syntax police: She often told me he could be a champion.
