It has been raining on and off all day here which doesn't happen often in the desert. Getting Isabelle to go potty in the rain is such a challenge! I always thought it was because she was born & raised in Phoenix. She also refuses to walk on wet grass. She has taken to going in the lantana which I am sure isn't good for it! It is suppose to keep raining through tomorrow at this rate I will be up til midnight trying to get her to go! Do Dobes not like rain??? :confused2

It's more of an individual thing than a doberman thing. I've never had one that minded rain in the least. But I live in the Willamette Valley in Oregon.

I'm sorry you must not have read the user guide that came with your dobe :D They actually are prone to melting in the rain, by general consensus that is :)

Yeah it was a pain this AM getting Lex to pee... the key is to work out a potty command with them. So when I put Lex out, I usually have to get stern with her, but I can stand at the door and tell her "GO POTTY" and after a few times attempting to look pitiful, she will finally go and hightail it back to the house :D

When it is raining I have to drag Bella out the door! Instead of just going and getting it over with she will just sit by the back door forever, looking at me like I am the worst mom ever!

I have a covered porch that wraps around 3 sides of my house...I have to escort everyone out to the edge of the porch when it rains. If I don't, they sneak around the corner and pee on the porch so they don't have to get wet. :)

But recreational water is TOTALLY different than rain for some reason.

LOL, When Lex was a pup, I would have to stand over her with an umbrella,
I finally decided that had to stop when I happened to see the neighbors were pointing and laughing from their window:lol2:

Isabelle sit on the patio by the door and won't budge. She also know what go potty means. Any other time she'll pee on command! Love the melting in the rain comment Lexus!

When she was a pup? I did this until last year when the lightening got really close and decided it just wasn't worth it. I had two huddled under an oversized umbrella every storm or drizzle. Now they sit at the door staring at me waiting for their escort service.

it is a well known fact that Dobermans are born with a gene Sciencetist have discovered and are now calling " the wicked witch of the west" Gene.. Now although this gene causes Melting in the rain or mist, it can also be seen in some Doberman in the tub at bath time.. Caution should be taken at all times, it is suggested that owners of Dobermans have a umbrella and rain coat (for the Doberman! Not the owner) handy at all times by the back door, to use for your Doberman in case of rain or misting.. Be sure that said Doberman is fully covered with raincoat and umbrella, before taking said Dog out in the wet weather..
If wet weather is called for by weather people... also caution should be taken to take said Doberman out several times to relieve themselves before wet weather hits..
Now studies have found that no amount of begging, shouting, pleeding or treat promises will work to get a doberman out in wet weather to relieve themselves..
One Doberman in said study was quoted " Hey, you got the Doberman, we hate the rain.. Live with it"
Rumor has it that a new study may be in the works for furter study to find out why Doberman melt in the rain but not at play in the garden hose.. MMMM we will have to wait to see....

Of course, Mensa will think nothing of swimming out into the Pacific Ocean to fetch a stick:

Or laying down in the wading pool every time she needs a drink:

And she's perfectly happy to run around in the rain for an hour chasing the Frisbee:

But expecting her to go outside and pee in the mildest drizzle is asking too much.

Mensa won't go out on her own if it even SMELLS like it may rain. Good thing (for her) we haven't had much rain this year!

Copper will typcially high tail it out..do her business and get back. But the big baby Cobalt knows that he will melt. A couple days ago was his first experience with the rain, and instead of following Copper off the deck like he does every other time, he planted himself right outside the patio door and pooped on the deck. Copper was in baby sitting mode, so as soon as she saw it there, she continued to bark until I came out and picked it up so she could come in the house. Evidently Copper also forgot how to either step or jump over things when it's raining.

Petey suddenly becomes unhousebroken on rainy days....he will run away from me if he thinks I'm trying to make him go outside! He is better if his ears are un-posted for the day.....something about water in there makes him nuts....can we blame him??? He is getting better about water in general, yesterday while hiking...he was running through the edges of the pond, and in the streams....he loved it!

As most have stated above, yes Dobes will melt in the rain!!!! You need to go check out the DoberToons cartoons and scroll down to "Singing In the Rain". This cartoon is in the 1-50 list, and it describes this rain problem to a T!!!! I would have put it here but I copied it and then it would not let me paste it.

It is a known fact that Rudi will melt if touched by one raindrop.

Poor guy.

Even getting into the bathtub for a bath is a challenge. But atleast now, he will slowly put one leg in after the other.
