Have figured out Dobes like to use their feet allot, when Buddy is in the house he wants to slap you with his leg all the time. He is a big boy he is getting quite exuberant about slapping you with is front feet. I was told at training class to just hold his paw till he got really tired of it does not work he will lay down with me still holding his leg.Hubby not too happy when Buddy slaps his lap with his leg if you get my drift. How is the best way to curb this with out hurting Buddy's feelings? Also he is still jumping up on people hubby went out into the garage Buddy jumped up on him he was not happy. I turn my back on him or go back into the house then go back out in a few minutes.
Do Dobes have Boxer in them somewhere?

I'm having the same problems with Petey....he just gets soooo excited! He is also 18 weeks. I'm just going to try and take it one day at a time, and be consistent with praise for the behavior I want from him.

Hahaha, Orson does the same 'slap to the lap' you speak of. We are working on it! The problem is these guys are so darn smart that it didn't take Orson long to figure out the 'sensitive' area that will get my husbands/sons attention REAL quick! So now it isn't just a slap while sitting, if a male is standing (any male Orson wishes attention from) he will do a nose goose to the crotch, LOL..........we are working on that too :D

Ooooh, Rommel is the worst gooser ever. I think I told you all that durning his BH, he heeled, but he goosed every single person in the butt and crotch when we went through the crowd. Pretty embarrasing.

As for the jumping up, the easiest way I have found to fix that....when he jumps up, just put your knee up. It will knee him in the chest (I mean...dont like jab him in the chest) but just hold your knee up, and let him correct himself. It wont take long. Also, when he jumps up on you, just dont give him any attention at all until all 4 paws are on the floor.

Mine are not the best about not jumping up. Rommel used to be great, he would NEVER jump on people. But I started teaching him to do it, like as a reward for doing well in obedience or just doing something good in general, and now he thinks he can do it all the time. Ziris is the same way. I dont want to correct her to much for it, because I want her to think body contact is okay, for sport, but I just have to warn kids and other people that she will jump.

Isabelle paws at you to get your attention. Usually it is when she wants something - like what you are eating. She can be persistant, but I found ignoring it helps. She doesn't get attention until she's got four on the floor.

Scared to do the knee thing Left Total Knee,Right knee 70% cartlige gone so have been turning my back on him we sometimes go in circles. He has almost knocked me down a couple of times. I usually just go in the house for about 5 minutes then come out again. I do tell him No sometimes at 11 months old seems like nothing I do seems to work with him.Guess Dobes are harder to train than Bouvier's?

Patches mom. Jumping up. Instructor in class has told everyone to roll your body to the side. (turn--by pivoting your body around-make no contact with the jumping dog). Pet dog when they have all 4 feet on the ground.Seems to help.

Java doesn't jumpnow (23 mos) - but she started to. I think a lot has to do with the age of the dog - it's natural for Dobe puppies to be bouncy. Worked it out in Obed Class. Java was wearing her training collar (prong) and when she jumped up, she got a correction. After the second attempt, she quickly got the picture. Lots of praise and a treat when trainer walked up and she kept all 4 paws on the ground. When I saw that she might want to jump up (ie. out walking and meeting people), I'd tell her to sit and give her lots of praise before she could act on the thought of jumping up.

What I do at the dog park when a big dog I don't know tries to jump on me is to bring my knee up - they are not hurt - and the dog isn't able to fully jump up. I also give the command 'off'. If the owner doesn't like it, too bad. I'm not crazy about the idea of a large strange dog getting that close to my face. I have seen dogs knock down small children and seniors at the park and there is no excuse for a dog behaving that badly in public.

Java will paw when she wants attention. Ignoring her helps as does distracting her with one of her toys - 9 times out of 10 she'll grab it, take it to her pillow and be quite content. If she is really persistent, she goes to her crate for a short time out. This breed is so smart that it generally only takes one time out and the problem is solved.

Java's not much of a gooser, but will do what we call the 'docking manoeuver' - she'll put her nose between my hubby knees about 4 in up, he'll scratch her ears and neck and she snorts and sighs away shamelessly. That's how she greets him when she hasn't seen him for the week. She doesn't do it to me - just him.

When I adopted Rudi.....He hadn't been at the rescue more than a week. He was initially found as a malnourished stray.....no one came to claim him at the pound. When I brought him home.......He already knew the sit, gimme paw, gimme other paw and he has never been a jumper. I've tried to get him to "dance with me" (I know....I need a boyfriend!) and he looks at me like....."Ummm, I've been trained not to do that." He must have been trained by someone somewhere. All I've trained him for is a few tricks like balancing a milk bone on his snout (If I keep it up he may go cross-eyed!), lay down, long down (I can even have him do this in the backyard, then walk around the house to the front then walk back and he will still be in his down position), wait to eat. And all commands that require movement (sit, lay down, etc...) he can do by hand signal now. He could very well be ready to get his CGC. I need to look into it.

They only thing he won't do....is fetch. I'm going to work really hard with him this spring/summer. There's nothing like playing fetch with yourself. LOL Good exercise!

Yes, Dobies use their front legs like arms/hands. Even when playing with other dogs, they tend to box.

My last Dobie when frustrated with Schutzhund training, would wrap his front leg around my leg. It was funny.

Java.....I fully agree with you. One thing I promised if I ever got a large dog, was that I would be the Alfaand my dog would be trained. I've seen too many people who have large dogs that never have controlled/trained them enough to keep them from jumping up on people. Mostly they were labs, boxers, rotties. I would call my one friend who had a lab youngster.........to let her know I was coming over and she had better put the dog up! I had too many ruined clothes by muddy paw prints. I know that sounds vain......but come on people! Train your dogs! They can be civilized!

Aha, so that's what it's called -- I'm so "happy" to see that FiFi is not the only dog who does that, it's driving us nuts. She does it to the rear though. She did it to a stranger the other day, I quickly told the guy that "I swear it wasn't me", and everybody got a good laugh.

Because of the pawing, I taught FiFi to "shake" and only reward her when I ask her to shake, otherwise she'll be totally ignored if she does it. She hates being ignored.
