Hello~

Hope its ok to post this here...
I was having a real hard time finding other dobie owners in my area, and
formed a meetup group online.
If you know anyone who lives in the tri-state area and would like to meet other dobermans and let them play together, please let them know! It's free to join and I would love for Lexi to have more dobie friends~

We meet at local parks during off-leash hours, local dog runs, and planning hiking trips once a month.

Our 1st meet will be in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY
on October 27th 5pm - 8:30pm on Nethermead.

We have 5 dobies so far~Please help me spread the word! :dancing_b

It sounds to me like five Dobermans is plenty. Out here where I am I don't know of any. Well, there is one group in the general region trying to do something like that, but they only had one or two Dobermans the last I heard, and they wanted to let males run together and I don't want to do that.

I know it could be nice, overhere they organize 2 or 3 times a year a dobermann beach walking, or sometimes in the woods. So they did organize it 2 weeks ago, there were about 17 dobermanns, and they all play together and run, it seems how bigger the group, how more less they fight. Its organize by some people of also take care of the website of the dutch dobermannclub, and because it is a succes they do it for about three years now.

Here some pictures.

That is so awesome! Duchess would love playing with another dobe I think! Coco doesnt understand how to fully play yet...and I think duchess gets frustrated. One time at the dog park she met a little doberman puppy and that puppy was chasing duchess around in circles forever! stalking! and playing like dobes play :) great pictures!

im in the area, but i would never bring my dobe to a playgroup that involved another strange male doberman, ESPECIALLY if he is intact!

Thats your experience, I do respect that,

Most males are intact I can tell you, they organize it here allready for a few years and never had any problems or fighting, the even go afterwards drink some coffe, with all the dogs and people, and they all have a nice day. don't forget they are well trained dogs who listen very well.

Last year we organize a dobermanplay day and we were having about 40 dobes, Every year the dutch dobermann club organized a lot of events, and every year a other club has his turn, so we were last year. I will show you some pictures to get a impression of it. We did a lot of games, ofcourse for the dogs, and there was a confirmation show, to let the people know what confirmation is, and a judge describes their dogs.

first the flag

The show

and the games

and her my favorite,

We took a A frame, make two wholes on both sides, put a long rope thru it, and at the end of both sides a bite tug, so the dogs don't see eachother, but feel the otherone pull on the other side, and they wanne have it desperatly!

The last picture is my yordi

It was fun that day,

wow ~ i really want to move there now!!! i bet lexi would too~
looks like so much fun~ do you mind if post these pictures on the site?

doberkim - i definitely understand your concerns. we do have strict rules posted on our about us page about aggression.
i wouldnt want anything bad to happen on a playdate~ but im sure owners know their dogs, and how they are around others and wouldnt/shouldnt come to playgroup if there was a doubt....but most city dogs are overwhelmed with socialization!

I mean this in the nicest way, nothing bad towards you at all, but I want you to understand a great many pet owners in the US seem to think the world of their dogs naturally but also believe they can do no wrong, and oftentimes, even when their dogs bite or snap at others, they say "oh they are just playing or give it time and they can be friends", etc. They don't take things seriously. And then things escalate when the owner doesn't step in and be the leader.

I have found the general public and the majority of owners really don't know their dogs as well as they should and have a huge lack of knowledge of normal doggie behavior and doggie signals.
This even occurs in training places, like letting their dogs bother others on leash in class (at the lower levels) or letting their dogs lunge at others, etc. They don't know what is acceptable behavior oftentimes, they don't know doggie manners. Maybe they let their dog bully the others, b/c that is just the way "he plays".

These owners make excuses for their dogs bad behavior or outright dismiss it or just don't know what to do or how to deal with it so they just let it happen or think if they just "love" the animal, he or she will come around eventually someday. Or think the dog only bit one time, or only attacked that dog b/c of this reason, and it won't happen again b/c this time/person/dog is different, or this male gets along with everyone and never has showed aggression before or is so well trained so he will be fine running with 10 unknown intact males Dobes off leash....

My long point is don't assume just b/c they own the dog, they are responsible with that dog and their behavior. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I have to agree with dobesanddragons, I had ******* in the woods the other day and a man and his Shiz tzu were coming towards us. His dog was off the leash and so was *******, I always put her back on the leash when I don't know the dog. This Shiz tzu came towards her very aggresively, actually I was ready to pick ******* up and take the bites myself. I grabbed his dog by the collar and to make a long story short he said to me "oh she sometimes acts aggresive but really she's not." I said to him, if your dog act's like this she should be on a leash when someone is approaching. The man said "well when your dog get's big I'm sure she will get her back" Reality is, some people just don't get it and they except you to deal with it. This guy did not even make a move or tell his dog to come back.

There is a difference between taking your dog to a show type of event (Which implies, IMHO, at least a basic level of control, training, etc) - ive taken DA males to things like that, and been just fine. My male can go to class, he can play with dogs he knows (including his best friend, and intact male TM), he can go to events that involve over 60 dobermans (as he did last month), and be just fine.

Taking animals to an off leash area and just letting them loose is a totally different thing. And something I would never trust someone else to be able to control their dog and know what is going on - if you have two males off leash, running loose, and aggressing, how exactly does one plan on separating them? I know for a fact my own male can certainly run fast than I can...

and quite frankly, with my daily exposure to the pet owning public (that I see 5 days a week and occassionally as emergencies :) ), I don't assume that they know much - simply because most do not.

Go to a dog park and watch the owners there - I have a very good dog park near my clinic, and I have spent time there - and there are still, even in that group of responsible owners, people who bring DA dogs, people who bring dogs incredibly fearful who will snap (and have snapped). I see exactly what owners "think" they know, and what they think their dogs are capable (or not capable) of. And sadly, they tend to find out how wrong they are when there is a fight, or their dog gets injured (or worse yet, injures another dog).

I agree with both of you about certain people not knowing about their dogs as much as they would like to.

In prospect park dogs are allowed offleash after 5pm and before 9am. The park is not a dog run. It's an actual park acres and acres of lovely grass and trees~ During those times there are so many dogs offleash everyday with no problems. Since I've been there, I've seen one dog fight where one dog was kept on leash and being aggressive to another dog which was offleash. That sort of stuff is silly and i wont comment further.

So far from what i've seen at offleash dog areas, they are much more well-behaved offleash than on. Less territorial and protective, more about running around and having fun.

If had my own yard it would be adifferent story. Since I dont, and most of us in nyc dont, we utilize these offleash hours on a daily basis. We share the park with other dogs and owners on a daily basis. Some people even 3 times a day! I'm sorry, but these people do know how their dogs act around other dogs offleash - it's a normal everyday routine for those who dont have their own yard~

The meetup group is just setting a official time, instead of coincidentally meeting.

Lexi has been offleash playing with all sorts of other dogs since she had all her shots and never had a problem. If i felt some situation could get aggressive i just whistle and she comes no matter how far away she is.

Of course not every dog has had training, but it's really so simple! You will be asked to leave at the first sign of aggression. They will be forced to leave before something happens. It's in our rules. Its the same rule that applies for every offleash dog area. We also have a 25 person minimum to our meetup.

I go there everyday and unofficially meet with other dobes (4 other dobes was the most) and rotties on a regular basis. Keep in mind that we were all strangers to each other at first.

I do understand the concerns and will keep that in mind. So far, the attendees are 2 girls and one boy fixed, that has played with Lexi regularly.
I'm sure we'll have lots of fun!

I agree that dog parks are a double edge sword. It could be a good thing, but it also can be a very bad thing. It really depends on the owners that are their at the time and how they react to their dogs. I have seen to many times of a not so good dog owner let their dog get out of hand and some one gets bit. Owner and dog.

But I think dog parks in major cities have one up than suburban nites. There is no place to take their dogs but to these parks and have them run around. I have observerd many dog parks in the city, NYC that is, and I am truly amazed on how the dogs get along without any troubles. With all the hustle n bustle going on, they seem better adapt to some dogs I see around suburbia. Just watching a dog owner walking down the busy sidewalks with poochy is something to see. It does seem their is a commitment you make to owning a dog while living in the city life.
