Has anyone had disc surgery done on their dog in the upper neck area for degenerative disc problems (vet ruled out Wobblers)? How was the outcome and did you administer any supplements post op like GLucosamine or other supplements to help with the healing process?

Alex had emergency surgery today, vet said outcome and prognosis for recovery good. Just want to tell everyone if their dog has this problem to get them to the vet quickly. Vet said better prognosis due to quick intervention at onset. This started off last night with a yelp for no reason, then slow walking until he collapsed and could not stand up. I didn't know what it was, afraid it might be bloat so we rushed him to emergency and they referred us to specialist.

Made me kind of wonder if using a choke collar early on - before I was enlightened - had anything to do with it. I feel so guilty now. I am getting a harness and vow to never use anything that pulls on their neck, well I can't use anything but a harness now on Alex so I will post to training to see which one others use that work on their Dobies.

So glad that his prognosis looks good, please keep us updated!

I use a harness frequently with Chi and have just as much luck with it as the collars with her training. Reading the articles at flying dog press really changed my views on having such a reliance on collars and leashes.
I do still use her prong collar when we are in public settings, she gets excited very easily and I have to have control over her in crowds. It's not uncommon for her to have her prong, a flat collar and a harness on at the same time, I just switch the leash to different D-rings as we go along. But for normal every day walks and training sessions, we almost always have the harness on. I talk to her a lot, almost a constant chatter, to keep her attention on me but that's a small price to pay in my opinion :)
I think though that Kim trained Bowie exclusively on a harness.
