Digestive supplment for repeated giradia?

1440 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  mmctaq
I found a supplement for digestive support and immune health on sale at doggieloot.com. It is Nurture-Ceuticals. Anybody heard or or tried this? I am willing to try anything to help fight against giradia. I know to empty all standing water, but sometimes you just miss one.
My boy has had giradia two times now. First time after a trip to the dog park which has a small stream running thru it. Second time was from some standing water in my yard after a 3" rain fall.
If there are other precautions, please let me know. Thanks.

I would also suggest treating your yard with ammonia-you can get big jugs of it in cleaning section of Tractor Supply/Rural King. I was told it was the only thing that really killed the parasites, supposed to be better then bleach. Other then stinking it is fine for your grass/plants. I sprayed my yard every couple of days with it and waited until it was dry to let the pup on it. I also put Gemma on probiotics to get her insides back to normal, I looked at the supplements but just went with FortiFlor (sp?), which I still give her everyday.

I can't find this supplement anywhere except sites like the one you found it on... no regular retailer seems to sell it. It is ALWAYS 50% off/$15 bottle. At the recommended dose, $15 gets you eight days worth. I cannot find out what is actually in it... which species of bacteria and how many colony forming units, what species of yeasts. It smells like a big fat scam, to me.

Half a cup of kefir a day would probably be a better probiotic supplement, and would certainly be less expensive.

I doubt it is possible to eradicate giardia from the environment, unless you decide to move into a sterile bubble. Dogs with reasonably competant immune systems seem to become pretty resistant to giardia, and giardia is a normal inhabitant of the intestines to a greater degree than lots of folks realize. If it is necessary to treat, Panacur is both safer for the dog and more effective against giardia than Flagyl/metronidazole... it is a mystery why most vets will still hand out Flagyl, which carries the risk of neurological damage, as a first choice.

mmctag: I found fefir online. It looks like you grow the "milk" to drink. Have you found it in any stores? I read up on it, and it does sound like it would be a good supplement.

You can buy commercially produced kefir at a lot of groceries... usually where the special stuff like soy milk and organic dairy/eggs are... it is kind of expensive.

Kefir grains you have to get from somebody. If you can't find any locally, try The Kefir Lady in Ohio: Real Kefir Grains · Quality Probiotic Cultures... reasonable cost, excellent service.

If you make it, it can take over your life LOL! The grains multiply, and if you don't give them away or eat them or feed them to the dog, you will have more and more and more... "Oh, no! I have to get home to feed my kefir grains!"
