I have trained with Dean a few times in the sport of Schutzhund and have learned a lot from him. He is older school however I found him always to be very fair with the dogs in training. Anyways this is an interesting interview, Dean's personality really comes through..lol!

"To a dog, you are more than God". "Understand your image to the dog".

Never heard anyone state it like that but it's so very true.

I finished the interview. He's very passionate about his work. Trying to find some videos on youtube of him trialing.

I'd like to find this video! :)
"In 2007, Dean was the first American trainer and handler to pass the German Korung in Germany with an American bred Doberman, Giovanni, whom he trained from a Bh to SchH3, FH".

I have been very fortunate enough to train with Dean, as he did live here and was a member of our club and trained with us on a pretty regular basis, and we were around for Gio's training, from start to finish, it was an absolute beautiful thing to see. when it comes to Dean He is absolutely one of the best trainer/handlers in the sport, and he is all about the dogs.

Yeah I have the ZTP on video of Gio, but don't have the Korung. Dean actually talks about Gio up in that interview saying that had he not worked Gio on the table Dean would have not been able to take him as far as he did. I don't think Gio had a whole lot of natural aggression in him. I think he had to light a match under his butt is basically what he is saying..lol!

Yes Dean is very passionate, if you constantly make the same mistake with your dog while training with Dean..look out! I saw some people get there head torn off by Dean..lol! He hates when the dog suffers because of people unwillingness to learn or pay attention. I think Dean is one of those trainers that you either love or hate! He can be very hard on handlers, you gotta learn to "suck it up" when your training with him.

I remember him saying that about Gio LOL I went to Bell'Lavoro's site and was reading more about Gio and Vicky's article on the German Korung. Very interesting and educational.

I've had the pleasure of attending one of his seminars and I absolutely loved it! He uses more compulsion than I generally like to use, but he is extremely fair, which is something I think is lacking in a lot of trainers. I also love how passionate he is about training and the fact that he hates all the politics that go on just as much as we do. As Okie-dobie says, though, if you keep making the same mistakes, he will definitely bite your head off! He's not like a lot of people, though, who will just give up on you. If you keep trying, he'll keep helping you. I'd recommend him anytime.

I believe I have video of him and Gio winning the Working Dog at the 2007 DPCA Dobe Nat'ls - if not I have pics. Can't seem to find video of the Korung - maybe it's here in an old thread?

I would love to see video or even pictures if you have them. Gio was Cash's Daddy.
