Cropping Rottweiler Ears

Is this something that's done? I had never heard of it being done, but I saw a Facebook friend post a picture of their Rottweiler puppy with cropped ears. I was just wondering if this was normal.

I don't think this is normal...in fact, I don't think I have ever seen a cropped Rottie, definately not part of the breed standard. I know some people crop ears really short for the purpose of dog fighting. I certainly hope this is not the case. Is is a short crop like a pit or a longer crop like a Dobe???

Never seen it. Never heard of it. Seems a bit odd to crop a rotties ears.

Not normal. And shame on the vet if it is a vet that did it.

That's what I was thinking... just wanted to check here before being appalled.

^ I snatched the photo... the dog confuses me, because it doesn't totally look like a Rottie to me. It's nose seems too long. But it's too short for a Doberman, I believe.

Looks totally Dobe to me... normally the coat is the give away, Rotties have quite long wavy hair, whereas Dobes are smooth coat.

Owner seems to think it's a Rottie!
Lol could be- photos don't show everything :) Where did they get it from?
Not sure. Starting to wonder about that myself...
That's a doberman, not a rott.

She's absolutely not a Rottweiler, but no vet worth anything would even consider cropping a Rottie in the first place. When I first saw the thread title without looking at the picture, I thought maybe you might be talking about a Beauceron, as they are traditionally cropped and would look slightly more similar to a Rottweiler as a puppy than a Doberman would. That puppy is definitely a Doberman puppy, though. There is nothing about her that screams anything other than all Dobe. Honestly though, it is ridiculous how many people who have Dobermans think that they have a Rottweiler and vice versa. Or, how many people think they're one in the same.

That is totally a doberman puppy, I'd put money on it o.o
Based off of that picture, I would pretty confidently say that's not a rott...
Fair enough. I thought it looked awfully Dobe to me, but he said it was a Rottweiler and I know its nose looks shorter than Kaiser's, so I thought it was possible. But thanks! Really wondering about owner now :confused2
lol should point out that that is deff a dobe and not a rott and tell them their breeder lied to them
The muzzle on that puppy is about what you would expect to see at that age--a Rott puppy would have a MUCH shorter and thicker looking muzzle.

The owner either got taken by the breeder or neither of them know the difference between a Dobe and a Rottweiler.

That's NOT a Rottweiler puppy.

As an afterthought--maybe the owner should take a look at the puppies registration certificate--if it got registered as a Rottweiler I'd be reporting a false registration to the AKC.

Yes, what everyone else said...

I HAVE seen a cropped Doberman X Rottweiler... not only cropped, but cropped and flopped. It looked totally wrong and bizarre. I cannot imagine why one would crop a mixed breed dog in the first place, much less why - if one wanted a cropped dog so badly - enough effort was not taken with aftercare to make the ears stand.
I'd tell your buddy that if that is a rottweiler Kaiser must be one too. And even if it were, that Rotties are not supposed to be cropped.

Shoot, I can't even find a picture of a cropped rottie on google.

If he went through a vet to get that crop and insisted it was a Rottie, I'm guessing he is the new laughing stock at the clinic. :/

And if the BYB sold him that dog as a rottie, I'm sure they're laughing their butts off too. (because no reputable breeder would sell a dobe pup to someone who has the impression it was a Rottie).
