He has been limping off and on on his right front leg and a large tumor appeared. I had it xrayed yesterday and it is cancer.

I'm not sure what method of treatment I am going to do with him yet. Will find out more tomorrow.

More than likely he will have that leg amputated this week. His chest exrays showed that it hasn't spread yet so that is good news.

His apetite is still good, but I know he is having some pain despite meds so I think taking the leg off even though it is just buying us some time is the way to go. I'm not ready to lose him. He is all I have. Yeah, I have kids, but Cole is my only companion and I don't know what I'm going to do with out him. He isn't even 7 years old yet and he is the best dog I could ever ask for. He has been my constant everything no matter what I have been going through. And he has been so excellent with my kids. I love him for that.

I am so sorry, it seems so many are losing their dobekids lately, it is heartbreaking. I hope that his has been caught in time so that he can still be with you for a lot more years. And I understand what you mean about companionship, we love our children but they have their own lives too, they become individuals when they get older, but our dobes stay by our sides and for better or worse they are always there!

Unfortunately there is no cure for it. What ever method of treatment we choose to do is only buying him painfree time.

I am so sorry for you. I know all to well how hard this is. I had a greyhound years ago get bone cancer, osteocarcoma in her right front leg. She did get an amputation, the also removered her shoulder blade to make sure they got it all. On her xray, her ankle had those tiny fractures all in it and they did a biopsy. She did great for years, but possibly from overbreeding because she was from a track, she got cancer again. I had photos of her froma 35mm, I will be more than happy to scan a few for you. Thanks for sharing your story. You are lucky to have her for years afterward. From all my research the prognosis isn't that great after amputation and chemo. A year is considered a long time to live after something like that because osteosarcoma is so aggressive and moves fast.

Did the cancer ever go to her lungs? Or did it reaapear in another bone?

She came in limping one day and I immediately took her in. A few weeks prior to this the utility company was digging in our yard and she had her right leg caught in a wire. She nearly lost it, but I worked with her alot and used a ton of epson and massage and ROM. I was a nurse and applied all the techniques we did for people. They amputated a couple days after the biopsy. She did not get chemo. We had her about 4 years after and one day I came from work and she did not greet me at the door. It was evening and I took her to ER vet. The rest is too hard because the vet ended up fracturing her spine. She did get cancer again in her spine. It did not spread to the lungs. She really had a great quality of life after. She ran all the time and still the other dogs could not catch her. I took her to meet and greets and everyone loved her. I got her before any of the rescues were around. You reacted very very fast. Many people wait weeks or more after they start limping. Getting it early like this is very positive. Your sweet baby I feel can do well for many years. As with cancer with people, the sooner you find it, the better chance you have. I had a friend in the army who lost his leg to this. 5 years later he was still doing great, I lost contact after do to deployment. Make sure they remove the shoulder as well and of course antibiotics, my dog got infection. However she was on her feet the next day. I was suprised to see how well she did. I cried for days and would not leave my bed. Please feel free really to call me if you want. Wow Sea, you are really lucky. Usually by the time osteo is diagnosised it has already spread to the lungs. At the very least seeds are planted.

Even though yesterday Cole's chest rads were clean that could easily change next week. It is that aggressive.

Amputation without chemo is almost always very short term survival rate, so count yourself lucky! I do hope I am just as lucky, but I'm not sure how quickly we caught it. The limping has been going on for a couple of months. He runs so hard I figured he hurt his shoulder and my boss seemed to agree after examining him. The lump was just noticed about 2 weeks ago and my boss poked and prodded it and it didn't cause Cole any discomfort so he said it is probably calcification. 2 days later he was holding that paw up and is when I said I want exrays.

So who knows if hte limping 2 months ago is related or not.
