I've found that dogs can be amazingly flexible--they want most to be with us, I think--the exercise and other stuff, though important, is secondary to being able to hog our attention as much as possible.
I slide in and out of depression, and some days the dogs don't get so much running around--but on those days they seem to use up their energy just snuggling as hard as they can.
