He'll get there. It's only been a week so his adjustment period is still underway. Don't get frustrated. Here's some great book recommendations, to get a jump start with him: http://www.dobermantalk.com/dt-educational-archive/46685-book-list-recommended-reading.html

He does not even know yet you are the new person in his life that takes time bonding takes time you just can't start telling him to do things he does not have a clue. You need to back up bond with him the way I bonded with Buddy was hand feed him but Buddy was 16 weeks old when I got him.Look up some obedience classes go slow he may have never been taught anything as yet.Good Luck

Sorry but you are not listening to what we are telling you, it takes more than a week to bond with a dog.You need to back off make things happy and be friendly the dog has to figure out you are his new person. He may think the person you got him from is coming back it takes time for him to realize that is not going to happen.Look at it from the dogs point of view dog in a strange place being spoke to in a strange language dogs are not born knowing human language it takes a very long time for them to figure things out. They go by your body language allot.believe it or not he is still a puppy = baby dog he still has to be a teen ager yet he is not hard headed give him love and time he will come around. Good Luck as some one else said take him to obedience classes where you both can learn together.
Yes I'm getting old and crotchety people ask for help but then do not listen to what people with years & years of experience have to say, I feel sorry for the puppies if you ask for help at least listen to what is offered to you. Sorry if I came across grouchy did not mean to be.
