I took Ziris to a breed handling class tonight. It was fun, there were alot of nice people. There was even another doberman! His name was Rusty, his sire was Chalmars The Big Red One (also a SchH III!) He was a really nice dog. I think I learned the most from one of the Junior Handlers! She was showing Rusty, and she helped me alot with Ziris.

We had fun. I will never take her to an AKC show, but I do plan on taking her to the ADA show in Maryland in March and entering her in the baby class :D (3-6 months) I think it will be fun for us, it is FCI standards.

Now I know why all you show people do what you do........it was fun. I have to say though........Ziris is a nutball.......Im worn out!

That's great BiB I hope you and Ziris really enjoy it. I am taking ******* starting this Monday to practise handling. It's not handling classess but a place where the handlers go to practise with their dogs and puppies. *******'s breeder will be there. I have worked a little with ******* but I didnt start early like you, makes a BIG difference. Ziris sure is pretty and should have no problem catching the judges eye!!

Well, I guess this really isnt a "class" per say either. But it is a bunch of people who show their dogs. Like next week they will all be at a show, there is only one or two that arent going, so it will be a smaller group next week. It is a not for profit, dog training club. You pay $10, and I think that is just to pay for the lights and the facilites (which were really nice)

We also finally met the TDI (Therapy Dog) Evaluator, and Piper is going to start that next month. I have to go with them for a visit without her, then she has 3 supervised visits, then takes the test. So I am pretty excited about that to. They do visits to nursing homes once a week, so hopefully we will be doing that also.

Be sure to let us know how your "class" goes also Okie-Dobie! If it was anything like mine, you will leave tired!

Now you know what i go through nearly every weekend in the summer and every wednesday at ringcraft training. What i would do is practise it at home even if you are not showing Rom or Ziris it is a good discipline to teach them, just standing still to command is really useful.

I doubt it, I have alot to learn before I start thinking along those lines. If three years down the road, she turns out to be some super specimin of a doberman, I would take it into consideration, but right now, I have no plans for her.

I just want to do as much with her and Rommel as I can, IMO just because an animal isnt breeding quality, or wont be bred, doesnt mean you shouldnt try to title them, and do as much as you can with them.

edited to add: Piper also...which is why I think the therapy dog thing will be great for her. She doesnt do any "formal training" but she is good with basic obedience. There is nothing that she loves more than interaction with people, she is such a sweetie, and she has brightened our lives so much, maybe she can contribute to others as well.

I think your right BIB, you get to have fun, make memories, and get a better behaved dog out of the deal most of the time. I would love to do something with our dogs other than just teaching them & walking them. No time until the kids are bigger or gone though.

You would be surprised what you can fit in. You might even try to get your kids interested. I would have loved to go to an obedience or agility class when I was younger!

I have always said that i wish i had started doing the OB and showing game when i first had Dobies because the dogs i have now are much better for being trained and Juno would have been so good at competition OB.

Who was the dam of the dog, Rusty - sire by BRO? BRO is actually an AKC CH/SchIII , one of only 5 in the nation, and the only one that has sired another AKC CH/Sch III.

I'm not sure of the dam of Rusty, I will ask him next time I see him, he will be at a show this week so I wont see him. I knew the sire was a Champion and SchH III, I didnt know that he produced a CH, SchH III though, who was it? Rusty is a really nice dog. Do dogs earn points being shown with Jr Handlers? How does that work? Is it the same?

Codys Mom go to www.AmericanDobermann.com and click on the top link that says National Meistershaft, ZTP & CAC Show March 16-17-18
It is the American Dobermann Winner Cup, a big working trial, then the CAC show is on Sunday the 18th. I just want to go watch all of the working dobermans, they will be coming from all over. So I figure...why not enter Sundays show, its only $40! Might be fun. The judge who is judging it is actually the same judge who is doing the ZTP's at elly's club next week. Crazy huh...small world.

In conformation, Junior's are judged for their handling skills. The points are awarded to the Junior not the dog. Many Juniors use dogs that are already championed. I can't say enough about the good things my daughter has learned (e.g., self confidence, poise, dressing up without being told) in the short time she has been showing. We are going to another match in Charlotte tomorrow. It only cost $5.00 to preregister. Em will show in Juniors and also in the breed ring. She doesn't like to compete against adults, but she can hold her own against other owner-handlers at a match show. I don't think there is a minimum age for showing in confirmation. So, theoretically, I believe my 10 year old could put points on a dog if she was a good enough handler. I wish I had more time to write, but dinner calls, so here are a couple of links.

For more Junior info see: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/rulebooks/REJRSH.pdf

BIB, did you know AKC is getting into the working dog act? http://www.akc.org/pdfs/rulebooks/RES600.pdf

The obedience pattern is exactly the same as Schutzhund BH. In fact the whole thing looks to be modeled after Shutzhund. Good for them, I hope it is a successful program!
