Well, went to vet yesterday... and now most of the dogs are on a diet.. Spirit is 110lbs... Gypsy is 95lbs and Raven is 80lbs.. I know it is our fault as we have not had the time to give them the exercise that they need.. we feed all the dogs 3 cups of food a day and a can of vegs each meal to split.. well now we are going down to 2 1/2 cups a day..Poor Spirit.. I could hear his tummy growling this morning.. He has been hitting his bowl to tell me he is hungry too... I feel like such a bad mommy.... I don't want my kids to be fat.. as soon as I get back from vacation I am really going to also try to teach the dogs to walk on the treadmil... Poor dogs...I really feel for them... I hate going on a diet...

Awwh poor kids But you're doing what's best for them really. It's hard this time of year too, just to cold and nasty to get out with them everyday and exercise them, not to mention the kaos that is the holidays anyway. Good luck on the diet. Try upping the veggies a little more as a filler for them maybe.

Lexus is putting on a few pounds too, she's gained about 6-7ish pounds that she really should lose. But I upped her food when the weather started turning, and I'm just now getting it back where it should be. I had noticed she was a little heavier (my supermodel still has a little tuck to her tummy! Just not like she did!!), but it really drove it home when my oldest started teasing me about her getting fat! Needless to say, he's grounded. (not really! They know Lex is "Momma's little Angel" so they love to rib me about her.)

It is always best to watch their weight. I've always been one that doesn't just measure out the food. Every day when I'm getting their dishes ready, I look at each one (I have 3 dobes), and if one or the other looks a little heavy, I cut back a tad. I do feed twice a day. Now if I could just do the same for me.

Aww poor doberkids. I also have the cats on a diet so I kinda know what you are going through. I hope your kids lose the extra "padding" soon. My husbands family tease us about Gracie being to thin. But they also forget she is a dobe and is suppose to be thin. She has a little pouch, which I think she may have been a mother at one point in time. But really I can't tell for sure.

Oh I know.. I really feel for poor Spirit the most..I taught him to hit his bowl to tell me when he was hungry.. Now poor dog is going round licking all the bowls and hitting them Bad Mommy.. I am upping the vegs.. to fill in.. but it is so hard.. I really hope when I get back we can get them on the treadmil that would really help.. Hubby feels bad, he is a postman and walks 8 or so mile a day 6 days a week and he is beat tired when he comes home and then me with a really bad back.. Heck I can hardly go shopping sometimes.. Well, we are all really going to work on getting out more and getting the dogs more excerise.. that is all there is to it.. It is for their health and ours..

If they're still feeling hungry you can add some puffed rice into their food with some water, it acts as a filler but doesn't cause weight gain. A friend of ours who breeds and rescues Dobes does that for some of her rescues that have to be put on a diet....

I too have Grace on a diet and have since the beginning of Nov...realized I had to do something when the neighbors friend asked me "What kind of dog is that?" When I told him she was a doberman he asked me IF I WAS SURE!!
LOL Took her to the new vet yesterday and guess what...she gained 6 pounds! Her girlish figure long gone she now weighs more than me at 121 pounds. I have been suspecting hypothyroidism for some time now with no support from my old vet. The new one concurs and her blood has been sent to the University of Michigan because as Doc Smith says she is an extreme case. Of course she has other symptoms too besides being not thin. I guess what I'm saying is if the diet doesn't work there may be a medical condition existing causing the weight gain. Canned pumpkin is also a very good filler for the poor hungry kids.:3dbiggrin

Do you guys in the cooler climates, find that your dogs "need" that little extra during winter? I just know how I feel, when it's cold, I tend to eat more. But during the heat, I really couldn't be bothered at all. I'm guessing the dogs would be similar.
