A general rule for young puppies is that they can hold their urine for as many hours as they are months old plus one. If he's 3 months, he should be able to hold it for 4 hours and you're expecting more.
Well..I don't know that i agree with this. I've found it's the norm for a 3 month old puppy to be able to stay dry overnight if taken out to potty at around 11:00 pm, then crated overnight, let out for the first time between 6-7 am.

If a 3 month old puppy CAN'T stay dry overnight while crated, the first thing I'd do is check for a UTI.

I have to agree with Murreydobe unless I just had an exceptional puppy. I would let ******* out at 11:00 and she would not wake me till about 6:00 the next morning. If I remember right, she pretty much slept through the night from 8-9 weeks on.
I'm sure ******* is an exception puppy in many ways. ;) But I don't think staying dry overnight in a crate at that age is one of them, I do consider it the norm..and the only time I've seen a puppy that COULDN'T stay dry overnight at 3 months of age was in one of two scenarios: either they had a UTI, or they'd been raised in an environment where they'd already been *trained* to be dirty. The first alternative is the most likely.

When I've had litters here, they were individually crated when I'd go to bed at 8 weeks or so, and as Okie-dobie said, they slept through the night and had dry crates in the morning.
