:emo6: My pup loves to chew, she gets Lg. milk bones, I found COW HOOVES and wondered if she could break pieces off and choak ? Whats the best for long chewing action, she'll go thru a milk bone or a chicken jerky in a minute. Are lambs ears safe? They look kinda small, same w pigs ears. I watch her no matter what she has but would like suggestions. Thanks

Odor Free Bully Sticks are AWESOME but make sure you supervise your dog while they chew it. Dreizehn likes to take an 18 inch one down to about 6 inches and then he tries to swallow it! I also like Himalayan chews and Antlers. Antlers last FOREVER

We use hooves and our guy is able to brake the pieces off hoove. We find bully sticks (cow tendons) or actual cow bones work the best. They take the longest to be chewed and we haven't had a piece broken

Also you can try the naturally shed deer antlers. Our boy loves them!

i have been going to the local butcher they sell frozen beef bones for cheap and kane loves them more than anything i have ever given him. no problems with splintering or breaking but i still watch him pretty close when he has them.

I like big, raw knuckle bones best for chewing. The knuckle bones are softer than the weight bearing marrow bones, and less likely to chip a tooth. Plus, the marrow can cause loose stools. We also give bully sticks, but they can get through even a jumbo pretty quickly, so they get expensive. I've also used the Himalayan Dog chews. My dogs aren't very interested in antlers, but I know some dogs love them.

I wish my dobes liked antlers, they're expensive, but I bought one. Not interested. Now if I smeared peanut butter on them...

I did buy one of the puzzle kong like things, put kibble in there, and watched them try to work it out.

I also freeze peanut butter inside some chewy toys and bones that are hollow. I never do rawhide, but pig hide and pig & cow ears are loved by my dobes.

I am spending more $$ on treats in the past 2 months than I have in my life. Because I have a teething puppy. I only get a minute's rest when Kaleesi has something to chew on. If 2 year old Dex doesn't have a chewie, then he's nagging me to throw the toy so that he can tear down the mountain and retrieve it.

I never give any type of rawhide or marrow bones etc... Bully sticks and pig ears are about the only thing I really feel comfortable with so far. More so the bully sticks. I only give them supervised though. I am getting more worried about giving pig ears now than I was when he was younger, because he can make a decent sized one disappear at warp speed now LOL. I have yet to try antlers but plan to. and I found braided bully sticks that last a lot longer... and brody seems to really enjoy them and trying to unravel the braid while chewing, so that's a plus :)

Cow hooves are dangerous. The smell terrible when they chew them and they do splinter off. Lambs, cows ears are safe. The "butchers bones" in shink wrap are good. Pigs ears are not healthy for dogs I would only use them on holidays. Bully sticks and tendons are good. I get beef soup bones from the store and boil for about a hr. I dont get the ones that are cut from the middle of the bone because they are too hard and can break teeth. My shepherd cracked his tooth that way. I get the knee part it has cartlige and meaty stuff on it. Sometimes they have some in the back and you can ask for them. Rawhide is good, but only 1 nice sized chew(retriever roll or 8''bone) a week. Be sure to supervise when they get anything new. Some dogs really chew things down and try and swallow biug pieces.

Mine would do the moon walk for bully sticks. I buy the odor free from here:
Odor Free Best Bully Sticks
Yes! Bestbullysticks.com is our favorite! If you sign up for emails/like them on Facebook, they usually do a 5-10% off sale once a month. We like the 12" Jumbo Bully Sticks, as they take longer to get through - they don't always have them in stock, but it's worth the wait. Large knuckle bones are a decent options for bones, as are antlers. But I prefer the bully sticks.

A word of caution though - consider working your pup a little slowly up to the big bully sticks (take it away after he's gotten through half, saw them in half at first, or order the 6" ones) because they can cause slightly loose stools at first. It's worth limiting his intake at first to see if he's at all sensitive to them.

I stay away from rawhide and pig ears and such because I've heard too many horror stories about impactions. Rawhide doesn't really digest, so if your dog gets too big of a piece, it can swell in the digestive tract and cause problems.

I avoid bones and give Roxy chews. They are C.E.T HEXtra with Chlorhexidine - recommended by our vet. I give her the green ones too.

I used to give Roxy antlers. She chewed on them so vigorously that she chipped a couple of her teeth. Just little chips - did not go to the pulp. We took her to the dentist and had composites put on to restore her teeth. Luckily no caps were needed. But the bill was still not small for the restoration work.

The dental vet said some dogs chew with too much force and too long on bones and you should always be careful of anything that is as hard or harder than you dog's teeth. He said it is dog dependent. Some dogs are fine and never will have a problem with bones like antlers but others can.
